right now i have it hooked up via fiber optic cable cause my onkyo reciever has no hdmi. but i am going to buy that yamaha that does have hdmi. a question i do have is that yamaha receiver has 2 hdmi inputs and 1 output. so does that mean i can run 1 hdmi from my bluray to the receiver and 1 hdmi from my hd dvr box to the reciever and then 1 hdmi for the receiver to the tv? and then will i have no need for the fiber optic cable? will the hdmi do the sound and picture is what im asking. thanks for the help

yes, that will be the exact run. no more switching video inputs on the TV! let the receiver do the work

If you haven't bought a revciever with HDMI ports wait for the 1.3 receivers.

BTW which Onkyo do you have?

right now i have the onkyo tx-ds787 its a 6.1 the reason im upgrading is because i want hdmi inputs and i wnat 7.1. why do you think i should wait for hdmi 1.3? also how long do you think until receivers will be released? what kind of cost do you think a good receiver will run?

You should wait so that when use the HDMI it can decode not only LPCM but also Dolby True-HD and DTS-MA Tracks. Plus tghe other benefits mentioned by jorg.

I don't think it will be that long before they are released and I'll be you'll be able to find for the price of the yamaha or maybe a little more.

so whenyou say the 1.3 receiver can decode dolby true hd and dts ma. does that just mean better sound? i understand that but how is the sound better in what sense?

paul,
a few months back we had a very detailed discussion in regards to hdmi 1.3

i have already seen some misinformation in here so rather than fight it and start the discussion all over, i will refer you here https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=3894

i would heavily recomend to explore all the links in that thread as there is a great explanation linked to AVS in the first post from JTK

unless there is physical difference most 'good' receivers, including Denon the RX line from Yamaha etc. will get updates ot allow for HD decoding in the future. Denon for instance releases updates all the time when a 'new requirement' presents itself.

For instance there are updates to allow their older HDMI receivers, i.e. 38--, 48--, and 58-- series, to accept and pass through 1080p. These were limited to HDMI 1.0(or was it already called 1.1 then?) or 1080i on release. If this is the case with going from 1.1 to HDMI 1.2 I dont see much problem getting an update to allow for HDMI 1.3 on these types of machines.

Clearly this is no guarantee but it is very foreseeable. I would purchase the best receiver you can today due to some great deals in the near future when companies are jettisoning stock to make way for the 1.3 units.

Also as I have said in other posts DTS on a 4306 Denon will sound better than DTS HD on a Sony 1.3 receiver that has 20x the distortion!!! (.05% THD 20-20kHz on the Denon, .7%THD 1kHz on the Sony RGR1000(?)) That is 14x distortion but only on one test tone. I wonder what the rating is across the entire sound spectrum!!!!

The video part is undeniably higher POTENTIAL on 1.3, but most TV's are limited today to 12-16-bit processing at the max (i.e. the Pioneer Elite's and Sony XBR2's I believe) so that potential of higher bit rates for colors wont be realized by any TV any time soon. By the time you will be able to you will want a new receiver anyway.
