The Inner Light is a really popular Episode, plus if its TNG they might as well have the first episodes on there. Maybe I could agree on the Klingon episode but I think its a good one to use for PQ, anything on the Klingon home word where its more gloomy looking...(well I know what I mean here, its hard to explain for me)

Anyway if it can be had for less then a tenner its definitely worth getting...

Also I don't know how much it's been discussed with The Original Series but their sets and make-up were never meant for HD so the Worf make-up will be a indication on the other make effects through-out the series. If you look at most on set pictures (of most TV shows) the sets don't always look brilliant in real life (or rather candid snap shots) versus been filmed with the correct film/light etc. When switching over to HD cameras for Star Wars they were surprised how much make-up and sets showed their deficiencies with a HD cameras.

Slightly different circumstances but hopefully if we do see the 'joins' then they'll leave them well enough alone (it will depend on how they originally shot the series I guess). I think enough time has passed that we aren't going to go up in arms over a bit of foundation on Brent Spiner or Michael Dorn's noggin....

So I guess they weren't waiting to see how this disc sold first...

STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® TO BE AVAILABLE IN HIGH-DEFINITION FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER FOR ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY

Star Trek: The Next Generation® – The Next Level Blu-ray Disc™ Will Be Released On January 31, 2012

Complete First Season Blu-ray Available Later in 2012

LOS ANGELES – The beloved series STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® will be transferred to high definition for the first time ever and released on Blu-ray™, it was announced today by Ken Ross, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Home Entertainment.

All 178 episodes from seven seasons will be transferred to true high-definition 1080p for release on Blu-ray and eventual runs on television and digital platforms both domestically and internationally.

“Fans have been clamoring for a high-definition release of STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® for years,” said Ross. “Transferring the series to high-definition presented difficult technical challenges, but our team has come up with a process to create true 1080p HD masters with true HD visual effects. We can’t wait to show fans how pristine the series looks and sounds with our upcoming Blu-ray releases.”

Transferring STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION® to high-definition presented numerous challenges – The series was originally shot on film and then transferred to videotape, which was used to edit episodes together. In order to create true HD masters, CBS is going back to the original uncut film negative – all 25,000 plus film reels of it – and cutting the episodes together exactly the way they originally aired. The visual effects were all shot on film and will be painstakingly recompositioned, not upconverted from videotape. The newly cut film will then be transferred to true high-definition with 7.1 DTS Master Audio. Denise and Mike Okuda are consulting on the project.

The only things I'm worried about is how much these suckers are going to cost and if I'll be too old to care by the time they hit sub £18!

That sounds quite fine, although if this were a show originally produced by George Lucas, everyone would be complaining that the recompositioned effects are not the "original" effects and their childhoods will be destroyed by watching them.

CBS obviously wants to do this right, but I do have to wonder if the uncut film negative is in better shape (expecially in regards to color) than the original video. I suppose someone made the evaluation that it was.

If old George had his hands on TNG he'd change Wesley into a CGI rabbit. Which probably has it's pros and cons....

I'm sure the negatives are in fine shape, maybe they've only been used once and put in storage? After the tape was made I can't see why they'd need to go back to them.

The difference here is that there is no way to get these truly in HD without redoing the effects...unless you want to cut the effects out completely. They're not doing it just because they want to (like George Lucas). They're doing it because they have to. So that's why people aren't all up in arms about it like they are with Star Wars. There's a big difference between the two situations.

And they are reconstructing the original FX shots from the 35mm film stock.
As far as we know they won't change a thing. They COULD change stuff but they said they won't.

No point waiting till then if you want them. I've been waiting for TOS Seasons 2 and 3 to drop below £40 for over 2 years so see that as an indication

Basically Star Trek sells on blu-ray hence price doesn't drop.

For £6.99 it's worth a punt. Thats pennies these days

Still haven't picked up TOS! or any of the 1-10 movies on BD Fingers crossed for some discounts in the Jan sales or maybe some decent discount codes.

I'd like to see the figures, I can't see many people being willing to pay £45+ per season (or even £34 each in the complete series set). Especially now considering how much blu-ray prices in general have dropped.

It's a depressing figure mate. They stay pretty high or have done. I think there was some research a while back that said Star Trek enthusiasts had higher incomes than any other fanbase (there was another fact which I won't mention!), must be because all the fans of The Original Series grew up to be rocket-scientists or astronauts....

Paramount is well aware of this fact I'm sure, while people who like a bargain are left out in the cold or left to reasonably priced DVD re-issues and the odd movie bargain on Blu....

Something like this (a remaster from film and re-composition of video effects) has never been done before for a TV series--the recent Farscape set was upscaled from SD PAL masters, for instance--and whether we like it or not, it isn't likely to happen again for any of our favorite video+film TV series again unless sales are very good. Certainly, part of the idea of putting the sampler disc out is to test the market for just how many fans will want this enhanced version of TNG, and I think it's a smart idea, because now I don't have to pay a fortune to sample TNG on Blu-ray on my own setup.

Think about the alternative: CBS releases Season 1, probably for 60-70 quid or more online, and you are faced with the dilemma of shelling out for that set to see if you enjoy the episodes in HD with redone effects.
+1

Was just thinking whilst reading the thread how much work would need to go into making a whole set look good.

I'd love X-Files on blu-ray but not a chance considering how many effects would need to be re-done.

Also the fact that new converts to Blu-Ray are a good chance Star Trek Fans so go hmm lets see how these look on the new system.

I will admit though after watching Season 1 of TOS I am very immpressed with the remastering. The detail and colour is sublime and actually looks better than some contemporary releases.

Sorry to bump up this thread, but the UK artwork has been updated:

Good to see it comes with a slip, instead of just a basic Amaray.
