5/5
Is this a trademark Allen style film? I ask because it received GREAT reviews, but I've never been much of a fan of his style.

I would say it's in the style of his recent efforts. Beautifully shot, lots of clever dialogue, well-rounded characters and some good ideas. It's not in his earlier slapstick style. Wilson makes a good substitute as the Allen character that Woody would have played 30 years ago.

The trailer gives an idea of the feel without revealing too much.

I can honestly say I didn't laugh or chuckle a single time the entire movie. And neither did the ENTIRE crowd. It was very awkward lol.

36th Precinct

Film: 2 1/2 (out of 4)

I had been looking forward to this film for awhile for many reasons, none greater than the fact that it has a perfect rotten tomatoes score, is compared to Heat, and has two of the most renowned French actors of the last 30 years in Daniel Auteuil and Gerard Depardieu. However, the film was mediocre. I found the plot and direction to be of "B" quality and the film wasn't particularly entertaining either.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

To be fair, I wasn't expecting much from this movie going in. The trailer didn't look particularly good and the first was only okay (3/5 + .5 for RDJ)...but it was free, so what the heck.

It turned out about as expected, the lesser of the two films.

Blackwood's story felt "so what?" to me in the first film and in this one Moriarty's felt even more so.

I could not have cared less about him or his plans...completely uninteresting villain. Maybe he's better in the books?

I quickly grew sick of the constant "Okay, this just happened and you don't know why, so we'll flashback five minutes and show you everything that made it possible in sped up time".

Downey and Law are pretty good together again, but that's not good enough. They were great together in the first. They had a few moments that were as good as the first film, but the rest was incredibly weak and carried only by their pure chemistry.

The action scenes were terrible.
They are either so fast and badly shot that Michael Bay wouldn't be able to keep up or in so much slow motion that Zack Snyder would get bored.

Like I said, I got in the neighborhood of what I expected...on the lower end actually.

Oh, and WHY was his brother
[Show spoiler]naked
? Completely pointless for the creation of an awkward "humorous" scene

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

No, I didn't watch this to finally get Foggy off my back
My buddy was scrolling through the movies on the on demand thingamabob and said, "Hey, let's watch this." and the list didn't have anything worth watching, so I didn't say no

I didn't loathe it, nor did I expect to. But I did, as expected, loathe Michael Cera...man that guy is just the polar opposite of anything funny. So so so so so bad.

Outside of him, I got a some laughs throughout, Chris Evans was easily the best thing about this movie in his brief appearance...followed closely by Brandon Routh.

But the laughs weren't anything memorable, in fact I can only recall a few of them specifically and it's only been two hours.

I can't say that I enjoyed the film though, because I hated the main character, couldn't care less about his trek through the levels of exes and wasn't really interested in the side characters (aside from Young Neil )

But I did get some in-the-moment laughs and didn't want to stab my eyes out

And hey...it's the best movie I saw today

Just saw Fincher's Dragon Tattoo. Pretty decent thriller. The best thing in it is Rooney Mara's performance. I'm interested in what Fincher could bring to the sequels after seeing this (if he does plan on returning). I'll try to post my full review later.

It's not exactly like Annie Hall, etc., but it's unmistakably Woody Allen. I think it's one of the best films of the year. You should check it out.

I dont know if thats true or not, but it is an awesome sentence.

I didnt like the first one at all. The action "style" was far too modern for a period piece. For my tastes anyway.

Was kind of fitting seeing how Holmes as a detective and person was far ahead of the majority of people at the time. The Movie (first0 doesn't really show that too well but in the books it is very well documented.

Same. I didn't dig it. I blind-bought the blu-ray and ended up giving it to my brother.

A number of people in the review thread are quite enjoying it (as did our own resident master of the fog), so there's a good chance you will.

I might be the first to give that a negative score in this thread

It's completely true as far as I am concerned

Then I highly recommend staying away from this one.

Its not Holmes I had an issue with really. In fact, he and Law were fantastic. So were the sets and costumes.

My problem was the directing and cinematography of the action scenes. And, the actual action itself. It felt and looked way too contemporary to me.

Yeah I got that but I was saying it is kind of fitting considering the forward thinking and far ahead of his time Characteristics.

I liked the way the action was stylised and modern, I don't like period films that feels the need to comply to effects of the time and not be inventive. I found both films to be fun and a good time

Its OK if the character is cool and ahead of his contemporaries, but when the movie has stuff that never existed in that era I have to a little. It would be like Maximus killing Commodus with a switchblade.

I'd probably like Gladiator a bit more if it had Jetpacks in it
