Default The Rum Diary - February 14th 2012

The Rum Diary Blu-ray

The Rum Diary Blu-ray Review

Amazon notified me this morning of this release, I have never seen this movie but being that I am a huge fan of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (Hunter S. Thompson & Johnny Depp) I will buy this blind and I expect that I will enjoy it. I heard that Johnny found this book on one of his visits to Hunter's home in Woody Creek, Colorado (near Aspen, CO) ...they were good friends.

Have not seen this one either however, I am like you, big fan of FaLiLV as well as Hunter S Thompson. Will most likely be a day 1 blind buy for me.

This will be a day 1 blind buy as I it looked good but lasted roughly 1.5 weeks in my local theater and I never got there to see it. Plus I am a fan of Johnny Depp and amber Heard as well as Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas so I should like this

Will definitely be picking this up. What is with that awful cover though? Hopefully they change it.

Is it like Fear and Loathing at all?

Blind buy for sure, here. Looked awesome but theater prices are too expensive for a movie that isn't like Star Wars. Day one right here

I finally caught this last night and IMO....
#1 This movie was very well written and acted and made...it is obvious that Johnny Depp put everything he had into helping make this movie as he and Hunter were very close friends.
#2 I will admit that after the first viewing I was like, "Thats it?". Oh well, it was a fairly fun ride and I have a good feeling that it will get better with repeat viewings.

So for now this movie stays in my collection. I watched the shorter making of part in the extras and tonight I will watch the longer piece 'Rum Diary Back-Story' which starts off with Hunter S. Thompson, himself from the ~90s.

Again, this was a well made movie and I think it will only get better with repeat viewings as there are lots of little elements to pick up and I am sure that I missed a few. There are many scenes that I look forward to seeing again on my second viewing which should be tonight or tomorrow.
I mostly agree with this guy......

Watched this Wednesday night. Really, really enjoyed it. I don't necessarily see it gaining the cult following Fear & Loathing did...but, it was nice to see Johnny Depp inhabit Hunter's personality again.

Really wish Ed Wood would come out on Blu-Ray...

I know!!

I actually thought this movie was boring, except there were a few funny parts. My favorite is when Depp is sitting on his friend bouncing around in that small car, when the burnt cop drives by! LOL

My wife and I rented this blu along with some others. This scene was really, really funny. I have mixed feelings about this film. I think it suffered from some pacing issues and the last 20-30 minutes were really disconnected from the rest of the film to me. If this part was meant to bridge the film to fear and loathing or something then perhaps that might explain it. Aaron Eckhart's character was really well scripted and performed by him and the movie was an interesting exhamination of the treatment of this country and its citizens at this time and the corruption which sadly still exists in many developing nations. I am glad I rented it but I cannot see buying this one as a permanent piece of our collection.

This was a blind buy for me since im a fan of Depps movies, however this was one of the worst movies Ive seen in awhile. When I was watching it I was actually hoping it would just end.

It's funny that Johnny Depp is 48 and the character in the book was 23.
Was Depp's character supposed to be 23? Hahaa I dont care how much make-up he's wearing, ya cant make a 50 year old man look like a college-age boy.

Will watch tomorrow. I see it was liked by critics more than Fear and Loathing but, will it snowball on home video and gain that same cult following?

I found Giovanni Ribisi's character to be funny. Felt he should have had a bigger role. This movie could have been really good. But, I feel they wasted a good opportunity. I give it 2.5/5

This is my favorite HST book, and it's a shame that not even a single line of dialogue was carried over into the film.
