It was purely accidental. I wasn't too concerned with HD-DVD or Blu-ray at first because of all the uncertainty of who was gonna win, and I didn't want to get stuck with having a useless player if I picked the losing format(even though I knew Blu was superior, that doesn't always matter). I actually got my HDTV specifically for gaming on my Xbox360, then my mom decided to get a 40GB PS3 to check out the HD movies on my t.v. and said even if Blu-ray loses at least you'll(me)still be able to use it for gaming. So I says ok, and now I'm addicted and bought my own 80GB PS3. I'm actually waiting for FedEx to deliver it today....it should be here any time nowAnd my mom actually bought her own HDTV now too So now we're one big happy Blu-family

Then you shouldn't "claim" the 40G PS3 as yours, like your signature says, lol

I got one free with my plasma. Seriously. I was going to get a HD-DVD/Blu-Ray combo drive... but glad I didn't. It's pretty obvious where there market is going. I wouldn't trade my DMPBD30K now for anything.

Actually, I ALMOST went HD DVD. I was about to buy a player, but something told me to email Bill Hunt and ask him what he recommended (this was back before the digital bits took an official side). I took his advice. And I'm damned happy today that I did.

I like the color blue compared to red! Really, I did not know HD DVD existed last December when I purchased blu-ray player. I had seen the Blu movies at a Hastings near me, but I do not remember any HD DVDs.

I was going to buy something. it was either going to be the PS3 or Xbox with the add on hd drive. I read a lot of reviews about blu-ray and hddvd. Overall i hate the xbox controller and i traded by ps2 for an xbox and wasn't happy after i did that. Even though i really wanted to play gears of war. This was right around launch time. Resistance was looking awesome to me and I just went with my gut feeling. I am glad I made the right choice. I think i use the pS3 more for the media server then anything, then movies and then gaming. Just recently have i found found love for the games again thanks to all the sales from boxing day. my social status is gone thanks to assassins creed, moh 4 and airborne. rainbow six vegas. and ghost recon. I picked up the splinter cell but hate it, too slow.

I bought an HDTV in 2004 and wanted more HD content. I learned about Blu-ray about the same time and had waited until the PS3 was released to get a machine that offered more than the average.

Bought a PS3 Nov. 20th, 2006.

While I've always been a Playstation fan (and knew, eventually, I would end up with the PS3 -- would have gotten one a year ago if supplies had been greater) what did it for me was the Pirates movies. Disney made the "for a limited time only" (yeah, right) announcement, and I suddenly realized that I was going to buy all three and, yep, might as well get them in high def.

At that same time (about a day later) I was in BB and saw the second Pirates on a HD screen and holy cow, did I do a doubletake! Went right home and ordered a PS3 through Amazon and two weeks later had 40 BD movies (and counting).

So I guess you could say both Disney and Sony (along with help from BB) tipped me over. Then two weeks later I discovered the war was over and I had joined the right side -- lucky me.

Playstation 3

Im a gamer and have been a huge PS fan since the PS1. Blu ray movies are just a nice bonus. I wouldnt have spent money on a standalone, even at current prices.

I'd read up on both formats prior to either being released. I liked what Blu-ray had to offer - larger capacity and higher transfer rates compared to HD-DVD. I also liked that discs with more than 2 layers had been successfully produced with gave me hope for the formats longevity.

After reading up a lot on the PS3 and Sony's plan for that (and finding out Sony's previous plan's for the PS2's lifespan) I had a strong belief that they knew what they were doing.

So to summarize, I guess it was a few things that had me routing for Blu-ray from the beginning:

1. Superior specs compared to HD-DVD
2. Strong belief that Sony had a good plan

What actually got me to buy into Blu was the software sales numbers, and the fact that I wouldn't be stuck with a useless machine even if I was wrong since I could (and did) get a PS3

On a side note, my father raised me on Sony so that probably helped. I never had any desire to own a PS1 or PS2, as I'm a Nintendo fan, so that probably hurt.

1) The movies that I wanted to watch were mostly in Blu... James Bond, Spidey, Disney movies etc.
2) PS3
3) I try to avoid anything with Microsoft's fingerprints if possible.

I had a PS2 and wanted to upgrade when the PS3 came out, which I did in early 07'. Anyway I did not know what Blu-ray was but knew the PS3 would play the Blu disc but was unaware that movies came on them, I thought maybe only the games were Blu.

After awhile I started seeing HD-DVD commercials and started researching them and Blu-ray, thats how I found this site. From what I found on this site and others it sounded like Blu was better and I already had the PS3, although I know gamers don't play movies on PS. Anyway now I have over 60 movies and 6 games, I am about 80/20 as far as movie time/game time.

I think Sony did I piss poor job of advertising the first full year of the PS3's launch. I think that I should have seen TV ads showing the fact that PS3 played such a great format. Anyway, I do want to thank all of of you guys and gals though for putting this information out there and helping people find out the real deal.
