Hello everyone. This is my first post here, but I've been reading tons of threads looking for ideas on upgrading my current setup (particularly dozens of pages in this thread). I figured the best way to get ideas is to register and post, and maybe others in my position will benefit as well.

My current setup is as follows:

Speakers - Energy Take Classic 5.1
Receiver - Onkyo TX-NR609

I decided to get the Take Classics about a year ago because I am new to HT setups and wanted to get an affordable 5.1 starter kit. For the most part I love the Take Classics and for my non-audiophile ears they sound excellent. The only thing that has bothered me about them since I got them is that I think the center channel is a bit weak. On shows with a lot of surround sound, the dialog can be too low. For example, I like to watch NASCAR which has great surround sounds, but the commentators can hardly be heard when the sounds of the cars whizzing by are on the surrounds.

When I started looking into potential upgrades for my centers, I figured why not go ahead and do L/R speakers as well and turn my 5.1 into a 7.1. If you take a look at my attachment, you will see my room layout and you can see how adding some new L/R would fit right in.

When I bought my house they already had the basement wired for surround, but it's a particularly large room for the Take Classics, and the positioning of the L/R speakers is too far apart and up too high. I know I could move them, but I'm waiting to decide if I want to go to 7.1, and if I do, the current L/R can stay right where they are and become front-highs.

So now down to what I've been looking at (if you're still with me up to now). I pretty much want to keep an all-Energy setup, so that's what I've mainly looked at.

The reviews on the older RC-LCR are awesome, but I feel I might need more powerful fronts if I go with such a good center. The reviews of the CC-10 are also good, but then I think I'd have to move to the CF series for the fronts to make them match. I've also thought some bookshelf speakers would work better than towers for the fronts, particularly if you look at my picture because bookshelves would fit nicely on my custom-built TV stand to the side of the TV.

Here are some particular options I've mulled over.

2x CF-30/CF-50/CF-70 with CC-10 center
2x CB-20 with the CC-10 center
2x RC-10 with the RC-LCR center
2x RC-70 with RC-LCR center

I kind of want to keep this below $1000, so getting the CF-70 or RC-70 (which are both $499 at Vanns) is getting to be pretty pricey, particularly since I started this looking for just upgrading the center. A pair of RC-10s can be had for $279 right now which is a great price, but if I pair with the RC-LCR center will they be overpowered?

I use this room basically for 50% gaming, 30% TV, and 20% music. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My suggestion would be to buy 3 Energy RC-LCRs.

Your room is fairly large, so the with the added drivers you can get more output, and they would give you the best timbre matching. I would also suggest that you get some speakers stands and put them on the stands so that you can play with placement, and get them right for your room. Look at this guys setup and you can see what I mean.

For the money, and your size room, this is probably the best setup you could configure. Otherwise you would need to spend the extra $440 to get the RC-70s/RC-LCR. The CF/CC and Veritas speakers would be nice, but theyd cost even more. And so taking your budget into account, 3 RC-LCRs would be the best solution. Increased Output, Higher level of resolution, better seamless transition of audio in the front soundstage(timbre matching), better bass, overall a better purchase.

The RC-10s would be nice too, and less expensive but for your size room, the RC-LCRs will give you more bass and more mid-range, and better output. To me the RC-LCRs are a no-brainer in this sitch...

Then Id suggest that you save up and get a new Sub. Look at the Hsu VTF-2 MK4, or elemental Designs A3-300.

Is anyone using the Veritas V-S? Why no love for bipole/dipole surrounds? Looks like everyone is choosing monopoles. I need rear wall surrounds for a system with KEF 700 front towers and the V-S looks interesting as a bipole surrounds. (Also, the Energy speakers have aluminum tweeters like the KEF.) The V-Mini is a possibility; I think that the 5.1 or RC-10 are too large to pass the WAF. I will probably be doing 70/30 home theater/music.

Just an idea, since you do have the Onkyo 609. If you decide to go with height speakers, your already wired and seem to have excellent placement for them.

I believe the 609 is a 7.2, and that way, you would have your normal 5.2 setup for surrounds and then add two more speakers for the height up front to make it a 7.2

I just bought a pair. Ill post up my thoughts after I get them going. Vanns has a decent sale on them that is ending soon. I think they should be fantastic surrounds, maybe people just cant afford them? Possibly? I dont know.

I wouldn't put that thought under, 'can't afford them'. I would imagine, people are not sure if the effect of di/bi-pole is worth the extra money over monopole.

I don't think that money is necessarily the issue. Since you don't really need to match your fronts (especially for HT), there are a lot of choices. I've seen good bipoles for $250/pair. Monopoles are supposedly better for multi-channel music so if that's your primary usage then you probably wouldn't want bipoles.

That is somewhat the point I was making. I was saying, I don't think the reason is can't afford as mentioned before me.

I am more under the thought that people are not sure it's worth the extra money.

Some people do, but not many are setting up for Multi-channel music in the Home theater forum. So the thought of how you use your theater should fall under movies as the primary use.

The people who are using the theater for more then movies are using 2 channel instead of Multi-channel. Which goes back to using bi/di-pole, and many are not sure if the extra money is worth the effect.

You are right, you can get some bi-pole at a nice price, but you can get monopoles even lower.

They are worth it. If at all possible, I never plan to ever go back to monopoles for surrounds.

IMHO, one set of di/bi-pole are far better then two set of monopoles.

I have two sets of Monitor Audio that are set in di-pole mode and I love the sound effect I get from them.

At times, I'm not sure which I am more proud of, my left/rights speakers or my surrounds. and I am proud of them!!!

At the bottom of the first post is a list of advantages and dis-advantages. On that list, every advantages was something like and didn’t care for the dis-advantages.

Di-pole are the hardest to place, but when placed right, there were the ones for me.

As much as I like di-pole, the writer of the link Big Daddy has asked me to try bi-pole to see how I like, but I just can’t…

and also, my manufacture stated, if I use all four, to put them in di-pole, it all came out to be a win-win for me.

So i quick update on my purchase of the RC-70's. WOW, hands down these are the best part of my system! The front stage is much more open and vivid, the detail and clearity i hear from my favourite songs is unbelievable. Even my girlfriend notice, she said it sounds as if your right there at a concert (and she was the one that bought them for me, don't tell the other members lol). And paired with Yamaha RX-A2010 these speakers just sing, my fr is soo much flatter in all listening positions of my coach, from right to left and the LFE is soo much more pronounced. I watched X-Men first class last night and oh boy, I swear it has the most LFE i dont recall the LFE being so engaging the first time i watched it. I'm in love, i really need to get the matching center now.
