In other words, you do have to go into your set-up and do the necessary adjustments. The fact remains that it would have been a lot easier to have the surround track made to work with bitstraming (or compromise somehow). As it is, anyone that bitstreams and gets a perfect two-channel split would assume that the presentation is fine. And White is the most problematic of the three films because there is hardly any surround activity there.
So according to Pro-B...the problem is only noticeable, if you bitstream. I use analog outs on my Panny BD player...maybe that's why I haven't noticed the audio issue?

I can't believe my request for Olympia started all this discussion. Isn't all the R1 dvds crap? I thought they were all public domain type releases. Either way, Criterion has released it before (thank fdm) and highly rumored to release it on dvd for the longest time now.

No...thank you! For sticking the title of this film in my head!

As per my comment on the petition page...look at all the people involved with this film!

I'd let Polanski take my girlfriend if it got me a part in a movie, or just, like, a free movie bundle or something. Luckily I don't have one, so she's safe.

Thanks for helping out rkish. The film is great, even on a vhs or dvd-r (I have no idea where the dvd-r transfer came from but it's widescreen). Hopefully we can finally have this movie released.

I also like how Criterion doesn't put Soderbergh's name on the front cover of their releases for him. They're probably bitter about that whole Solaris remake thing.

As much as anything, I'm just plain curious. I haven't seen Hopper's The Last Movie since its original (and very brief) theatrical run. Although I remember the polarized and often venomous reviews at the time, I don't recall feeling that way myself. It wasn't an easy film, but nevertheless interesting. If Criterion does take it on, inclusion of its companion making-of documentary American Dreamer is a must.

Village Voice retrospective review of The Last Movie.

The Film Talk retrospective review of The Last Movie and American Dreamer.

Oh, without a doubt.

BTW, anybody that is up to watching full length movies on youtube and don't have the vhs/a dvd-r, both The Last Movie and The American Dreamer are on there:

Well, I can't find The American Dreamer at the moment.

Does anybody know if this is true. I went to my local Best Buy looking for 12 Angry Men in BD, and was told by a clerk that Best Buy no longer orders Criterion Collection discs. This would be a bad move on the part of BB.

I bought a copy of 12 Angry Men a week ago at Best Buy. They have some Criterion in stock, even recent releases like The Lady Vanishes so I doubt it .

So does anyone know which version is on the Olympia LD? I would hate to watch an edited version of anything. I'm surprised Riefenstahl kowtowed to have her film shown. As she has often been quoted as say the 1930's were "the good old days".

I've got the same e-mail. No mention of the CARLOS audio or the THREE COLORS: BLUE framing issues, though.

Not sure if scenes are cut in the LD at this moment, but I have read that the transfer looks as good if not better than the Pathfinder DVD (which is said to be the best R1 dvd around, because everything else is dvd-r. Not saying much because the image looks like crap on any dvd you will find of Olympia). Just another reason why this needs a restoration.

For such great imagery, versions of this film on dvds sure suck.

But back to your question, everything I have read about the LD doesn't have anything about "censored" or "cut". I know copies shown in Germany are "cut", so you might be fine with the LD. Remember, whatever you are watching, will most likely be what everyone else has seen (from the LD or the Pathfinder release, etc.), so don't feel too bad if this is edited.

Admitting you're a Polanski fan to certain circles is akin to saying you're a pedophiliac rapist, who hates Baby Jesus, and kicks puppies. For the record, I happen to enjoy Polanski's films.

I readily admit that the first hour or so of the theatrical was boring, and I was just about ready to give it the write-off, but then it picked up and held my interest for the rest of it. As I said, I will be trying to watch it again, and may order it during the next B&N 50% off sale depending on how much of my other first tier wishlist titles get cleared out before then.

You're forgetting that people expect to be able to buy Criterions for 10 bucks, as they're really only worth that, and anything more is a crime against humanity. You're just as bad as those Roman Polanski fans who are pedophiliac rapists that hate Baby Jesus and kick puppies.

I do too, see my first comment. People just assume you are a horrible person for liking his movies, because he is a horrible, horrible kiddie diddler and should be executed. You really need to read Fark.com anytime a Polanski thread shows up, it's hilariously sad with the amount of hate towards Polanski because of that incident. I don't condone it, and think it was bad, but people need to give it up already.
