So in conclusion,

The ACC is 2-13 in BCS bowl games. The worst offenders are FSU (1-5) and VaTech (1-4). Clemson, GT, WF, and MD each have lost once.

In addition, VaTech was 0-1 in BCS bowls before joining the ACC, and Miami was 3-1.

You ready to do the tally for the Big 10(ish) now?
I hadn't realized FSU's BCS record was THAT bad. Then again the BCS era started in 1998 and the Noles started their decline as a national power right about that time. The last time I recall FSU being a powerhouse was around 1999-2000 with Chris Weinke. Steady decline ever since.

Not surprisingly, that coincided with Mark Richt's departure and my attendance at FSU.

Hard to believe but between 1987-2000 (13 straight years) FSU never lost more than 2 games in any season. And if I'm not mistaken they finished top-5 in the final AP poll every one of those seasons. That included an 11 game Bowl Game win streak.

Unfortunately Bowden's teams had 8 one-loss seasons, usually leaving them top-5 but with only two national titles. Those 1993 and 1999 FSU championship teams were two of the best I've seen. The 1993 wiped the floor with everyone except for a fluke loss @ Notre Dame on the last play. The 1999 team was loaded and ran the table beating a terrific Mike Vick Virginia Tech team.

I'm still not sold on Jimbo Fisher. He always rakes in a top-5 national recruiting class yet they still find a way to lose about 4 games each year. He needs to show results soon.

I think some of it revolves around quarterbacking. Manuel was very inconsistent this year, and we all know how hard it is to win with shoddy quarterback play. Next season will tell us a lot about Jimbo Fisher, he fielded a very young team this season. If they don't show progress, I imagine he will find himself on the hot seat.

Their quarterbacking has gone down hill ever since 2001 when their top recruit Joe Mauer chose to play baseball rather than football. Even though the odds of Mauer playing football were slim Florida State didn't really have a backup plan when he didn't go to school there and hence the Chris Rix era began.

Penn State has reportedly hired Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien as their new head coach. O'Brien has never been a head coach at any level. He graduated from Brown (like Joe Paterno) and was an assistant at Duke, Georgia Tech, and Maryland before joining the Patriots in 2007. He will stay with the Patriots for the remainder of their season.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...ch-sources-say

Penn State alumni are not happy with the hire of O'Brien and wanted the school to hire someone with ties to Penn State. Former PSU linebacker Lavar Arrington said:
Quote:
“I will put my Butkus (Award) in storage. I will put my Alamo Bowl MVP trophy in storage,” Arrington said. “Jerseys, anything Penn State, in storage. Wherever Tom Bradley goes, that’s the school I will start to put memorabilia up in my home. I’m done. I’m done with Penn State. If they’re done with us, I’m done with them.”
Former PSU All-American linebacker Brandon Short said:
Quote:
“I don’t want to be affiliated with the university if they don’t choose a Penn State guy because of our standards, our graduation, all the things that have been important… it’s no longer Penn State, so we might as well be in the SEC. They are intent on turning it into a booster culture. Ira Lubert went out and purchased a national title with wrestling and he’s under the illusion that he can do that in football. Well, ask (Redskins owner) Dan Snyder about that.

“Penn State is a family and it is real and if they choose to get rid of Bradley and not hire a Penn State coach, then they’ve turned their backs on our entire family.”
Former PSU All-American running back D.J. Dozier said:
Quote:
“If the board or the committee believes that they need to go outside of the current staff, which, I don’t see why, then go get a Penn State guy.”

lol funny PSU alum, and boosters act like everything didn't happen and they are still considered some prestigious program.

Oh and Tom Bradley looks like he's a snake anyway. After his comments following the incident I hope he gets to stay at PSU and gets beat down year after year just like he did this past season.

That doesn't sound good for Penn State fans/alums.

Penn State has an overinflated and unwarranted opinion of itself.

I like the hire and think the school absolutely had to bring in an outsider -- at least right now -- to help with this galactic mess.

Exactly right. The program is in a mess from lack of institutional control. This is a case where you absolutely need an outsider. You don't want someone who has been around the program during Sandusky's tenure/crimes.

Had the Penn St. job opened up pre-scandel then yes, it might have been considered a top-tier vacancy with many good coaches wanting the job. Right now it's toxic and they're lucky O'Brien even wanted the job.

Those fans probably thought they deserved to steal Les Miles or Nick Saban away

One thing I've heard is Penn State doesn't honestly expect Bill O'Brien to succeed but they couldn't do better at this time. Regardless of what former players wanted they weren't going to hire someone on the current coaching staff, they needed someone with absolutely no connection to Jerry Sandusky. No big name coaches wanted to be Joe Paterno's successor and the job is toxic right now so they brought in O'Brien. If he doesn't succeed the job will still look a lot better in 4 years if he's fired, because the Sandusky situation will largely be done and the pressure of following up Joe Pa will be gone so they should be able to get a quality coach.

Hopefully this move weakens the Patriots, too.

When Charlie Weis took the Notre Dame job he stayed on with the Patriots throughout the playoffs and they won a Super Bowl. Hoping for the same thing to happen here.

Feels weird seeing a bigger name like Weis coaching crappy Kansas and more or less a no-name O'Brien coaching Penn St. Then again Kansas has more upside. There are pretty much no expectations there and Weis can recruit very well. He should improve them.

Oh I sorta had the long-term in mind, fd. If the Patriots never won another Super Bowl in my lifetime, it would be too soon.

God, it occurs to me that my entire life as a sports fan has been rooting against teams I hate rather than for my favorite teams. This is what happens when your favorite teams are the Atlanta Falcons, the Atlanta Braves, the Atlanta Hawks, the now-defunct Atlanta Thrashers, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets football/basketball/baseball teams, and so forth.

Take this bowl season, for example. GT lost, what else is new? I'm kinda numb to that happening by now. But man did I get a kick out of watching U(sic)GA blow their game at the end of regulation/in OT, Virginia Poly do the exact same thing against Michigan, and Climpsun give up an all-time record number of points to WV.
