Default Upscaling confusion....

I've had my PS3 for just about a year (PAL 200GB) and have been collecting Blu-ray movies pretty much from the day I got it.

Anyway, it occurs to me something odd about the whole Blu-ray vs DVD upscaling thing which confuses me. I could be wrong about this (feel free to correct) and apologise if this has already been discussed.

OK - I put in my DVD and the PS3 upscales to 1080 - great. I play the SD special features on a Blu-ray and doesn't upscale it and keeps it at 480!

Why can't/doesn't the PS3 upscale SD content on Blu-rays? It can do it brilliantly for DVD but doesn't even appear to try when it comes to SD content on HD media!

Am I wrong or is there a setting I'm missing??

Just wondered if anyone could shed any light on this because in theory I can get a better image from a SD content on a DVD than SD content from a Blu-ray!

EDIT - also if this is the case is it just affecting PS3's or is the situation the same on standalones??

I dont have an answer for you but I was wondering that about games too. You can play ps2 games and it will upscale to 1080. but if you play a ps3 game, which the majority of them have a HD output of 720, why can't it upscale it to 1080? and another thing.... why are these game coming out in 720 anyways???? I've noticed that most PS3 games are 720, but the same game for the crappy other platform will be 1080, are they just upscaling??

I understand that mate.

My question is why don't players upscale the SD content on Blu-rays like they do with DVD's?

This is an interesting question. When the PS3 upscales the SD it is not increasing the disc volumn of the SD yet it upscales. Why can it not also upscale the extras on the BD?

i guess because its like well since its a blu-ray disc if we wanted it in hd for the extras we will just put them in hd but since there wasnt enough room on this 25gb disc we couldn't and so then its like why bother? its a blu-ray disc so i guess upscaling is out of the question or at least thats how i feel. So my question would be why not a 50gb disc? or at least 720p extras?

xbox 360 games are not full hd even though they support it and it outputs in 1080p its not full hd because they are just dvd discs so its almost the same as upscaling a dvd into a ps3 kind of idea.

Just guessing here. When reading the SD disc, it's using the ruby laser and I would assume completely different software to read it. So for some reason, when using the violet laser and its software, there's no upscaling available. Perhaps that's coming down the line with a firmware update. Seems like it would be an easy thing to do if they could do it on the SD side ... but maybe it ain't that easy (must not be that easy or they'd have done it, right?).

Odd...this question was brought up a while back and this comment was all over that thread...I think it may have even been you (I may be mistaken).

But yeah, I noticed this a while back. Since the PS3 upscales DVDs, it's strange that it doesn't automatically upscale SD content on a blu-ray. It gets annoying sometimes while changing resolutions.

Good guess, it's probably either that or they just overlooked it (like they overlooked resuming playback after turning off the system)

well that was my answer back then as well and well its a blu-ray disc if they are going to put hd extras they need either a disc set or at least a 50gb disc or something like that

I have the same feeling, I've yet to see any upconversion up to 1080p on anything that is a lower res than 1080p on a blu-ray disc. 1080i Blu-ray movies aren't deinterlaced, 720p PS3 games aren't upconverted, 480p extras on Blu-ray discs aren't upconverted, etc.

After a quick search of the 'net, I found nada. A similar thread sprouted over on AVS (no flames) but all the "answers" were guesses as well. It seems like such an obvious thing to do (upscale SD content from a blu-ray disc) that there must be a technical issue involved that's preventing them.

Of course, that "technical issue" could be nothing more than available development resources. I'm sure they have a long list of stuff they're upgrading on the PS3 and upscaling SD content from a blu-ray disc just might not be that high on their list.
