I was always under the impression that Freddy was a child molester and murderer. They only time they really showed that side of him was in Freddy vs. Jason when he was he pulled out of the girl's dream when he was about to rape her.

Actually, as noted, they covered most all the essentials at the end of "Freddy's Dead: the Final Nightmare", and yes, even that one had a "It was somebody else's fault!" origin.
(As "Psycho IV: the Beginning" demonstrated, just showing a day in the life of a nutball isn't particularly horror, particularly if we know he won't be getting around to doing his classic act yet.)

And if it hasn't been mentioned yet, the reason we're getting this is New Line, not Wes--
New Line wants Michael Bay to squeeze out one more "Texas Chainsaw"-style slicko-remake--with the same Marcus Nispel director, of course--but since they're keeping it in-house, why not the Franchise That Built New Line, for corporate vanity's sake?
Oh, and since they now own Jason, they want Nispel to do the "Friday the 13th" remake, too.

(Basically, we're one step away from getting Michael Bay-produced remakes of "The Mask" and "Fellowship of the Ring"...)

Wes Craven's New Nightmare was an excellent reboot of the series and whatever else they do with the series should be in the same vein. Freddy is at his best when he's less jokey and more meanacing. If they can come up with a story (prequal, sequal or reboot) that stays true to the spirit of the original and New Nightmare then I'll be totally on board. If not, I hope it dies a quick and painful death.

Still, it's a good example of why Wes isn't on board for this one (apart from having his name contractually listed):

I don't know if anyone actually liked the potty-mouthed (well, it is a Wes Craven movie) and less-wisecracking #1&2 Freddy, who seemed to be "all tongue and no mouth"--
But watching New Nightmare, in which Wes wanders through the movie himself M. Night Shamalyan style, as a mysterious godlike figure, while everyone whispers "Did you hear he's working on another one?" in hushed awed tones...
One comes away from the movie with the clear directorial allegory of "Ohh, too bad, so you finally drove the franchise into the ground without me?--Well, now I'm not going to play anymore, so don't come running to ME when you all end up dead! "

(...Nooo, Wes isn't bitter about the third movie.)
