I think if you had a dedicated Home Theater room that has been sound proofed, then maybe THX would be a big deal...but for those with an average set-up and lots of clutter in the room, THX certification might not make a bit of difference. (ive had both THX and non THX receivers, couldnt tell a difference.)

Absolutely. And at that point, to be 100% certified, you'd probably need certified cables, speaker wires etc...

Also I rather like the earlier analogy to grade stamping. As soon as I saw the sentence I thought "yep, exactly." Great job Beta-Man.

Although food grading is required by law, companies LOVE to have their products associated with things like THX. It's a way of showing that they meet certain criteria. You can make spreadsheets to show it and confuse the consumer, or you can pay to have your product tested. (Kinda like ANSI for building materials).

Great replies! Many thanks to everyone.

I think I'm still going to go with the Yamaha 3700. It's got everything I want but the THX dilly.. and that seems like your paying for the name mostly.

Thanks again to everyone!

Default Thx does make a difference

Thx is excellent with the right equipment. First a thx receiver is only good if your speakers are also thx certified. My 3d tv, 3d bluray player and ofcourse the onkyo receiver plus speakers are all thx certified and you can tell a difference. They work in tandem.

I'm not sure what you mean by "in tandem".

I have two Elite receivers, the Pioneer 84Txsi. They're connected to very different televisions, players, and computers, and subwoofers, none of which are certified. The sound is amazing, and they all work together just fine.

I'm curious: why do you say "First a thx receiver is only good if your speakers are also thx certified."

On one of my rigs, all of the speakers are Definitive Technologies Mythos speakers - all seven of them - none of which are certified.

On another I have two Sonus Faber Domus speakers, with the rest Definitive Technology Mythos speakers. Again, none are certified, but both receivers are. It's giving off reference quality sound.

I'm not clear on the basis for your statement.

But how do you know for sure, if the superiority of sound, is originated from the THX equipment, and not from the audio source? Lossless audio sounds great anyway, whether the equipment is THX certified, or not.... Have you ever listened to a non THX, high end sound system, and compare, or are you saying, THX equipment sound betters, just because it's THX certified? Any high quality audio equipment, will give stellar performances, and it doesn't necessarily have to be THX certified to do so. My home theater sounds fantastic, and my equipment isn't THX certified, and I don't think it'll make that big of a difference if it was. There are a great deal of high end receivers on the market, that are capable of being THX certified, but they haven't been tested by a THX engineer to get the THX certification, and logo manufactured on the product, due to cost efficiency.
