The economy was flush and since DVD hadn't actually required people to update their TVs, it seemed reasonable to finally update them for the new disc format.

However now the economy is not nearly what it was, and the market for physical media is rapidly vanishing. DVD and Blu-Ray were heralded by massive pushes in Best Buy, Borders, Circuit City, Barnes & Noble, Tower Records, Virgin Megastore, etc. They're all now gone or in their death throes.

I find it hard to believe all but a small group of tech nuts will be willing to update their TVs yet again for this new format.

Don't get me wrong, I love films, and I love seeing them in increasingly higher quality. I've even given in and replaced most of my DVD library with Blu-Rays after seeing how immeasurably better they look.

But I just can't see this new format taking off in the eleventh hour of physical media as a format. Books, music discs, movie discs - they're all doomed to become a niche market like LPs soon, just for collectors.

Maybe this new format will serve those people, maybe they'll become known as "videophiles" . Maybe I'll even be one of them. But when you consider what a relatively small percentage of catalog titles are being released to Blu-Ray, how many catalog titles are still being released to DVD only, I just don't think this new format will have any noticeable impact.
Physical media isn't on the out. In fact, data lately doesn't even support that last I read. And irrelevant but the day physical books and book stores become a niche is the day I die a little more inside. I will always prefer a physical book to some electronic reader device. I love a book store and id much rather walk through one and look at books than swiping through an electronic library. Plus, a nook just doesn't feel up the shelves of my office like my books do.

Good for you (sincerely), but if there's something I know in this life, is that I'm not getting into another home-video format, ever. 1K is good enough for the biggest sized screens I will ever get. Unless I become a millionaire overnight.

Also, as if economic and practical reasons weren't enough, as someone else pointed out here, I'm already struggling with the fact that there are almost no catalog blu-rays out (of titles I really want: very old movies), compared to what got released during the good years of dvd, so what should I expect of starting with a new format now? absolutely nothing. So that's it.

Blu-ray is still something new for a lot of people though. I dont think the 4k format would catch on quite as well. New TVs and players ... again? Forget it.

Laughable. Sounds to me about as promising as Digital VHS.
Yeah, considering how many ordinary people don't even have any HD programming running correctly to their shiny new HDTV's, I don't see 4K going very far in this economy.

At best, it will catch on some HT enthusiasts and well-heeled types.

When I go into BestBuy (there are 5 that I go to) I am usually one of a hand full in the Blu Ray section even during the holidays... there are always more in the DVD section (scary thing is that in one im not sure the employees know the difference between BD and DVD)... Digital media is the future (maybe not soon but eventually)... its hitting gaming, books and movies... they younger the person i talk to the less they care about the physical media... its the times... iphones, ipods and kindles are killing it off... I am one of the few my age (mid 30s) or younger that collect movies... everyone is on Netflix... I dont think 4k blu will catch on... by the time 4k tv is main stream you will be able to stream 4k movies off the web... I can stream live tv on my 4G phone... PSP Go came too early for download games only but in a few i bet thats were it will be... if you download a game on your phone thats what the future will be

Am I right in assuming most/all of the supplements are from previously released editions? I have the most recent DVD and most of this stuff looks familiar...

plus they are not exploiting things like streaming properly. with a dvd/bluray you get commentary, etc which is not usually available when you stream movies. until they create a "virtual dvd" that you can download with all the extras, physical media will never die off. digital is the next step but look how long vhs held on when dvds came out? it took a long time for them to die off so don't plan of stores like hmv and bestbuy going out of business because no one buys movies anymore (blockbuster is a different story altogether).

in terms of Casablanca, damn - another one i need to buy.

I read on one of my gaming sites that sony is developing a better cloud for their next system to include other media that should have the extras... only thing holding back streaming is the download end... when broadband is the norm and the next step past fios is here and streaming 4k movies is possible then you will see most or all media dying...

What the minimum screen size to be able to see the 4k appropriately?

I hope we get another Best Buy digibook exclusive or something, because, again, I have no interest in one of these box box UCEs.

I agree. Either a BB digibook or a UK release in a normal plastic case is what I want. I have no room for or interest in useless dustcatchers. I just want the movie and the video extras.

Actually, by mid-2013 it will be 7 years (not 8) that blu-ray came out, and that's including the format-war, which was a waste of time, and dvd didn't have.

I guess this is a joke that's going over my head, because blu-ray is 1k, and I'm already a big supporter.

Which is exactly what everyone said about blu-ray 7 years ago.

As someone else above mentioned, bluray is closer to 2K. These "K" measurements are always quoted in horizontal resolution.

Apples and oranges. The economy was very different 7 years ago. And back then, many/most consumers had older/analog TV's that they were anticipating upgrading to HDTV. Now that they have upgraded to HD and have lots of HD/Blu-ray programming available, my impression is that most people (including on this board) are more than happy with the quality.

Not only that, but theres a pretty huge difference between standard def, and high def. It warranted an upgrade for most. But when we start talking about a 50 inch screen, would 4K benefit that much? Not really. On smaller sets and depending how far away you sit, it is already hard to tell the difference between 720 and 1080. The larger the screen or the closer you sit, the more noticeable the advantage of a higher resolution becomes. 4k is just not a feasible home solution except for a very niche market of people that have full fledged theater screens in their homes.
