Default High Def Digest recap article: "The Week That Was"

There was good (and bad) news for fans of both high-def disc formats this week, assuring plenty of continued back and forth in the ever-heated Format War Smackdown area of our forums.

On the Blu-ray side, the fallout from Warner's decision to drop HD DVD support continued, with distribution partner National Geographic confirming that it would follow Warner to Blu-ray exclusivity, and Gartner research predicting a Blu-ray win in the format war by late 2008.

On the HD DVD side, Toshiba announced plans for a multi-million dollar Super Bowl ad, while format backers touted gains that saw HD DVD increasing its hardware market share for the week ending Jan 19 to 34% (up from just 7% the week prior).

Internationally, Blu-ray supporters pointed to an announcement from UK retailer Woolworth's that it would stop selling HD DVD discs as a major European victory, while HD DVD fans trumpeted word that two Italian distributors (Dolmen Video and Mikado) would back HD DVD only.

Meanwhile, back here in the states, steep discounts on HD DVD players at Circuit City lead to a series of reports that the retailer was planning to drop support of the HD DVD format. (A rep for the retailer was later quoted as saying the company planned to remain platform agnostic.)

No mention of the Sonic Solutions dropping HD DVD support, which I think was more significant than most all of the rest of those tidbits.

2nd that. It's hilarious reading some of the posts in their smackdown forum. Not worth posting, but worth a chuckle once in a while.

Platform agnostic?

Agnostic, from Greek agnôstos (ignorant).

So really, Circuit City said they would remain ignorant. Okay, have fun with that.

You should go back to the dictionary and then re-read the quote. "Ignorant" is off.

It's amazing how HD-DVD fanboys are saying that they will make a comeback. The writing is on the wall. A lot of companies are saying it is buy dumping HD-DVD support. And although Paramount and Universal has not declared Blu-Ray support, take away Warner releases and their upcoming title release is abysmal... in fact, after feb 19, Universal has nothing slated (hint! hint!)...

Actually, it's an appropiate rendition. However, the original remark is odd.

Does Circuit City really not have any proof of the existance or lack of existance of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

Does Circuity City really think there is no way to prove or disprove the existance of Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?

High Def Digest has always been pro red, though they announce news on blu, but if it is not good news for red, they don't announce and very rarely announce good news for blu it seems. It has always tilted red.

I like the header, good news and bad news for both formats! seriously bad news for blu is that two Italian distributors "may" be red exclusive. Come on, that is really grasping. Bad news for blu, quite it!

Funny thing is that the news about Dolmen Home Video/Mikado is three months old and that the titels mentioned in the linked article were ment for January.

No announcement from Dolmen Home Video/Mikado them self exists and they have not released anything on HD-DVD even if January is long gone.

Here are the Google translations of the original sites that mention the "news". They are dated November 8 and 9 2007...

All HD-DVD fans have left is to trumpet three months old news that turned out to be only rumours and wrong as such...
