Such a garbage. Not worth $1, Criterion or not.

Some people, like myself, do actually enjoy the film. What a shock, I know

to answer the question, keep an eye out on your Amazon's Gold Box, I found mine there for like $21, or so.

Depends on where you live. Mine shipped Friday, arrived Wednesday ("today"). (Which is a day or two quicker than the last few times.)

It's not a great film and to be honest I would even be a little hard pressed to say it's very good but it's definitely not garbage either. It's a great time capsule for its era, the performances are all pretty enjoyable and it all fits together awfully well considering what it is.

The release is very good as well. Blow Out looks absolutely great and Murder ala Mod alone would be a great supplement pack.

I'm glad I picked it up cheap(ish) during a B&N sale but I don't regret having it at all.

I have Blow Out and think that it's good, but nothing special. I have no idea why Quentin Tarantino absolutely swears by it though. I've heard him say that it's one of his top three favorite movies ever, and a huge reason why he eventually ended up giving the role of Vincent Vega to Travolta in Pulp Fiction... Which is partly why I ended up buying it. I won't say that I'm disappointed, especially because it's a Criterion and the technical aspects of the blu ray are superb, but I have no idea why exactly Tarantino loves this movie so much.

Shipped same state, but Pittsburgh's about 300 miles from my humble abode. Thanks for your input!

I thought the last third was perhaps the most interesting, with the middle act being what stumbled for me.

I really enjoyed the film, but it's definitely not what I would call a classic. Travolta's performance was excellent though, imo. I can totally see why Tarantino wanted him for PF.

The penultimate scene

is sealed in my brain forever though - I was captivated by it!

I enjoyed Blow Out. It's not the best Criterion release in my collection, but it's definitely not the among worst either. John Lithgow is all kinds of awesome in it.

Just curious, what would you consider your worst?

And speaking of De Palma, I saw Sisters which I enjoyed very much. It's a good horror/thriller. I loved the use of the split screen. Haven't seen Blow Out. Are they similar?

I haven't watched Sisters, so I can't comment.

The worst Criterion I own is A Safe Place, out of the BBS box set. The rest of the box set more than makes up for this film. It makes the film that shall not be named look like Citizen Kane. A Safe Place is the worst film in the entire collection, yet it doesn't seem to get the hate and vitrol it so rightly deserves, as people think the film that should not be named is worse for some reason. Must be because the film that should not be named isn't in a box set.

Seriously, the film that shall not be named is no where near as bad as what people have said it is. There is no way in hell that they have even attempted to watch A Safe Place, if they think the film that shall not be named is the worst film ever in the Criterion Collection. Drive, He Said is also rather weak in comparison to Blow Out from the BBS box set, but still somewhat enjoyable. I can't ditch A Safe Place because I do somewhat like Drive, He Said, which shares a BD with A Safe Place. It does have its own spine number as well, #548: http://www.criterion.com/films/27531-a-safe-place

I've tried watching it twice, and still hate the film. I may attempt a 3rd time with copious amounts of alcohol.

Edit: Although Lola Montes is a much better made film, I enjoy Blow Out far more. You have to be in the right mood for Lola. I also liked Blow Out just a wee bit more than Topsy Turvy. They're all about 7-7.5/10 scores, while A Safe Place is more like a 4.5-5/10, and Drive, He Said is a 6-6.5/10

Question

Given Criterion was willing to do "Godzilla" and that no domestic Blu exists, I think they should do a Blu of the orginal "Night of the Living Dead". It spawned an ENTIRE genre that's still going on today afterall! What do you think?

I think it's because not many people have even bothered to watch A SAFE PLACE. I know Border Radio and Tiny Furniture get plenty of hate but they cannot be worse than A SAFE PLACE.

It's almost comical it has a blu-ray release yet Bicycle Thieves does not. :/

Re Blow Out being garbage. It always has fascinated me that people try to find redeeming qualities in movies with garbage scripts, which defy logic and are an insult to the viewer. Sure, not every single thing about this movie was bad (Travola's performance was good, feel of the time was shown pretty well indeed), still not enough to call it good movie by any measure.

Just had an email from Jon at Criterion regarding my faulty discs of Walkabout, 3 Colors White and Carlos, and because I live in the UK, he said not to send my discs back, and in about 3 weeks when the Carlos disc is ready, he will send out all the fixed discs. Great customer service.

I'm normally quite pretentious in my film taste but I really liked Blow Out. I'd certainly rate it higher than any of De Palma's other films.
