Toshiba Whines That Sony Won't Compromise Blu-ray Technology
August 26, 2005

Toshiba whined on Friday that they couldn't convince Sony to compromise the Blu-ray specification to make it lame and stunted like HD-DVD, making a useless but unified High Definition DVD format.

"The backwards compatibility with old DVD lines is about all we have going for us" said Mark Knox, advisor to the HD-DVD promotion division at Toshiba. "If we can't convince the Blu-ray association to adopt this also, at the cost of future scalability, there is no room for a joint standard."

Mr Knox went on to say that making the discs a little more expensive to allow for future scalability was incredibly short-sighted. "Profits in the near term are key to the continuing success, and if we make the standard scalable, we won't be able to introduce yet another new standard for some years to come."
