They were too busy giving nominations to masterpieces like the Help, and Bridesmaids. You can not too much stock in that though. The movie is decent, with an absolutely amazing performance by Olsen. Who going by this, is going to be future star.

Could have helped its Oscar chances if they'd released the film a little later so it was fresher in voter's minds. A bit bigger push by Fox Searchlight may have helped as well. Too bad Olsen couldn't have at least gotten a nomination. She seems really great in the film. The actress field was so full this year though, which really hurt her chances. I almost wish they'd open up the acting categories so if it's a good year it will be possible for there to be up to maybe 8 nominees, but only if there were enough worthy contenders. So often I have trouble narrowing the categories down to just 5 for my personal list.

The Help and especially Bridesmaids with Mccarthy did not deserve a nomination at all. Viola Davis was very good and is fine she got in, the movie was not that great though.

I couldn't believe how Bryce Dallas Howard did not earn a nomination as another Best Supporting Actress candidate. She was IMO the most convincing character in the entire movie. |

I'd rather watch The Help a dozen times over Martha Marcy May Marlene. IMO this was another overrated indie film -- good performance by Olson, sure, but the movie is painfully slow and increasingly obvious (you just knew something truly horrible was going to happen as a "big reveal" in the last third), and (what do you know) it all ends ambiguously just when it threatens to actually become interesting. You could watch the whole film on fast-forward and not miss anything.

And I'm fine with both The Help and Bridesmaids getting nods. Loved both. Both would be in my top 10 of the year. There are others I liked more (Another Earth, 50/50, Melancholia, War Horse, Drive), sure, but they're not undeserving. |

I really enjoyed this. Elizabeth Olsen was incredible as the lead and conveyed a wide range of emotions. Hawkes was uber creepy and stole every scene he was in. The music and cinematography also get top marks from me.
I didn't mind the ambiguity. The story is told from Martha's perspective so it's only right that we see as she does (what's real and what's not?) The constant feeling of paronoia was perfect. |
