Default Help, which is the better Laptop?

I'm looking into a laptop for my girlfriend and an ad on bestbuy's flyer caught my eye today and i've been researching all night about specs and shit.

Don't want to go higher than 499$ which is the price of those two laptops

One is the Asus that's now 599 but will be 499 come friday and the other is a Lenovo that's 499 also.

Lenovo has Intel, Asus has AMD, they both have 8gb of ram so that's great right there.

It's more in the hardcore specs that i don't quite know which one wins

Check them out for yourselves

Lenovo :

http://www.futureshop.ca/en-CA/produ...b525262cdfen02

Asus

http://www.bestbuy.ca/Catalog/Produc...39&SortOption=

I mean the AMD has 4 cores but only 1.4GHZ per core as the Intel has 2 cores but 2.3. Also there's a difference in Cache memory whatever that means

Also on the Graphics card, the Asus has ATI Radeon which i think is good, the Lenovo has Intel HD card which i don't know about.

So many similar specs

Help please!

Hell this computer im on right now only has 2GB of ram and it's about 6 years old! so i guess anything is better than this dinosaur im on :P

Thanks!

They're both integrated graphics, the Intel and the Radeon, yet the Radeon has a bit more oomph than Intel: http://www.notebookcheck.net/AMD-Rad...G.55734.0.html

I'm biased towards Intel processors, because I've always had bad luck with AMD. It appears that these two are about par, with the AMD being a little better though: http://compare-processors.com/core-i...a6-3420m/2386/

Asus is also a more reliable brand than Lenovo, and the Asus has a larger hard drive.

At this point, I'm leaning more towards the Asus, due to their reputation for quality, the larger hard drive, better graphics performance, and slightly better processor.

Wow that’s exactly the kind of reply i wanted to see! Very detailed and to the point! Thank you very much!

Yeah I’ve always been an Intel guy myself, even though I never had an AMD computer nor laptop. But yeah I was also leaning towards the Asus.

Same here! I say stay away from AMD if given the choice.

Good luck.

However, in this case, the AMD model has better specs on it overall, despite the AMD processor; in this case, the AMD processor is equal to the Intel. I can't really comment on the performance of it, as I'm an Intel gal, but depending on what you want to do with the laptop, the AMD's a better choice if you plan on doing any gaming and such, and Asus is a better quality brand.

Here's a suggestion:

http://www.thesource.ca/estore/Produ...roduct=2510500

The RAM is lower, but you can pick up laptop RAM cheap at Newegg.ca: http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...rder=BESTMATCH. It has an i5 instead of an i3, so some turbo boost.

More comprehensive specs here: http://www.zdnet.com/reviews/product...b-hdd/34473310

If your girlfriend isn't playing games, you'd might be better off with an Intel processor.

I'd definitely go with an Asus or Toshiba. I've only had a Sony for a month, but it's pretty solid so far. Acer has a bad rap, but I've had success with them. HP/Compaqs are problematic.

She wants to do alot of video editing though, so a better graphics card would be nice. And I might try to game on it myself!

I think my mind is set, I’ll get the Asus AMD.

Thanks for all the help!

Hey if other people have opinions I’d still like to hear them!

You might be better off paying more than 500 for one with a dedicated graphics card then, if you are doing video editing and/or casual gaming:

http://www.futureshop.ca/Search/Sear...Category=25315

http://www.bestbuy.ca/Search/SearchR...Category=28239

I paid 850 for a laptop with a low to mid range dedicated graphics card, a BD drive, 6GB RAM, and an i5 processor, because I was going to do some light gaming (The Sims 3) and light photo/video editing away from my desktop.

A desktop's actually far better for gaming and video editing.

This is what I went with: http://www.bestbuy.ca/en-CA/product/...f70496bb79en02

However, I went to Future Shop, paid the same price, and got it in Orange.

Yeah but 500$ is pretty much all we’re willing to pay. I’ll buy myself a monster desktop in a year or two(2000$+). And the MAIN use of the laptop for her is really just web surfing. She just wants HER computer lol

As for the video editing it’s pretty much only cutting her videos she took with a digital camera to put on youtube. Nothing hardcore here. And I’ve got a PS3 for my gaming needs. Though I WILL try out some demos on her new laptop :P

Ah, gotcha, I thought it might have been heavy duty video encoding and such. That Asus should be fine, although like I said, I don't know a lot about the AMD processor.

I just purchased the Asus. Gonna pick it up tonight at Best-Buy.

Btw what's the best and easiest way to transfers alot of files from my desktop to that new laptop. From XP to Win7.

I've read that maybe i could create a LAN and transfer files there? How do i make the two machines 'talk' to eachother?

My Sony came pre-loaded with a program that allowed that, but the only LAN cables I have are in use, so I didn't bother. What I usually do, is back up anything crucial to an external HDD, to put on there instantly. Anything else that's important, I transfer via the homegroup and network settings. I haven't had to swap from XP to 7, just 7 to 7, or Vista to 7, before I upgraded an older machine.

What types of files are you looking at moving? Some are easier to find and move than others.
