Good point. Scott said we would see the DNA of the first Alien movie, but not the subsequent ones in Prometheus. The "d" was added to Weylan in Aliens.

From AVP Wiki: The name "Weylan-Yutani"was created by Ron Cobb, one of the designers of the Nostromo and its crew's uniforms.
"
One of the things I enjoyed most about Alien was its subtle satirical content. Science fiction films offer golden opportunities to throw in little scraps of information that suggest enormous changes in the world. There's a certain potency in those kinds of remarks. Weylan Yutani for instance is almost a joke, but not quite. I wanted to imply that poor old England is back on its feet and has united with the Japanese, who have taken over the building of spaceships the same way they have now with cars and supertankers. In coming up with a strange company name I thought of British Leyland and Toyota, but we couldn't use "Leyland-Toyota" in the film. Changing one letter gave me "Weylan," and "Yutani" was a Japanese neighbor of mine.

—Ron Cobb, "The Authorized Portfolio of Crew Insignias from The United States Commercial Spaceship Nostromo Designs and Realizations" by John Mollo and Ron Cobb

The original spelling of the Company's name was Weylan Yutani (note that there was no D in the name). At no time in Alien nor in the portfolio was the name of the Company spelled with a D. This was changed to "Weyland-Yutani" in Aliens.

Also: http://forum.alienslegacy.com/viewto...619&view=print For the Weylan-Yutani Beer Can. You can clearly see Dallas drinking from this can at 01:55:49 on the Alien BD. It is just before the chestburster scene.

I suspect that Fox wanted the "d" added to Weylan to maintain some measure of continuity with subsequent films. To get a flavor for what Ridley Scott truly thought about the changes in subsequent films, read this interview with MTV from 2010:

I thought Bishop was the namesake for the Weyland of Weyland-Yutani based on Alien 3, but it turns out I was wrong. I looked it up and found his character listed as "Michael Bishop". I guess I was thinking of AVP where he was Charles Bishop Weyland, and we all know AVP is not true canon. I still can't wait to see this movie and how it ties in with Alien.

That sequence was absolutely brilliant in that it completely encapsulates the Prometheus myth, What the elder gods have created, and how we now feel that we are the gods having created intelligent life. Superb!

I also got a very Sam Neill-ish vibe from Pearce's performance. Hmmn. Don't know why... Probably thinking back to Dr Wier from Event Horizon over the weekend...

Somethin tells me that absolutely no-one is going to be bothered if Prometheus blatantly ignores Paul W S Anderson's cack-handed attempts to link his crapolla to the masterpieces of Scott and Cameron. Except Beast.

I thought it was established that the craptastic AVP movies never were in continuity anyway?

Guy Pearce commands the room in such a way that you almost never see. Wow. He's hypnotizing. And this is just the viral marketing... Is it too early to nominate him for an Oscar?

That video will NOT be appearing in the film, so sayeth the man himself:

https://twitter.com/#!/DamonLindelof...03246470565888

As for the AvP continuity, which source exactly stepped up and said that they were not part of the bigger franchise that some may say is now approaching 9 films? (Alien sequence=4, Predator sequence=3, AvP=2, and Prometheus.)

That's okay. Stuff like this will just make the film experience richer.

The TED video won't appear in the film, but Guy Pearce as Peter Weyland will:

Lindelof: "First off, Guy Pearce is a brilliant actor — you basically just write the words and let the actor do what they’re going to do with the words. And Peter Weyland’s role is still a toss-up for the audience. They don’t know what he’s going to be in the movie, or how this talk relates to the movie. I do think that, if someone is going to be saying the things that this guy is saying, then there is a god complex inherent in the speech. Guy Pearce took that and ran with it, and I feel like that gives it a certain degree of entertaining power."

[Show spoiler]The vibe I'm getting is that Weyland, who is supposed to be 23 (but looks 20 years older in the viral video) has a degenerative disease which is causing him to age rapidly. It is quite possible that he is the old man seen in the ttrailer. Perhaps he is cocoooned and metamorphosed into an engineer in an attempt to restore his health.

Although I highly doubt the latter part about the old man, that would be be a neat parallel to JR Sebastian from Blade Runner.

[Show spoiler] Where did you learn that Weyland is 23? a piece of info I missed?

Check Weyland's bio "born at the turn of the millennium". Video is TED 2023.

http://www.flicksandbits.com/2012/02...ed-talk/22148/

Prometheus movie takes place in 2085, about 30 years before Alien movie per Ridley Scott quote, which takes place in 2122 (Nostromo lands on LV-426 June 3rd, 2122). Weyland would be around 85 at the beginning of the Prometheus movie. Another important date is 2073, the date of the Weyland web site posted earlier by Monkey. https://www.weylandindustries.com/ We should see something there in a few days regarding the financing of the Prometheus expedition. I'm not a twitterer. Has anyone signed in to it on the Weyland website? They are probably using that to guage interest in the movie. You twitterers should be bombarding them with demands for an R rating.

That seems to be a fairly immovable timeline that you have there. Seems to me there is no reason to have Pearce play the part in Aged prosthetics if you aren't going to see him as a younger man. By that rationale something from or akin to the viral video will be in the final film, even if it is a crewmember watching an excerpt from it on a monitor or whathaveyou.

Or should be. They can put up any kind of advancement in technology, genetics or him being a robot to explain why he hasn't aged. In theory he should be 70 but for all we know, there would be some circumstances they could cook up to make him still appear young during Prometheus.

Or they can use the angle of him being the son of Weyland with the same name.

Perhaps he's in the film in a cameo as an old man wishing the Prometheus crew Godspeed on their quest for the fire of the gods. My guess is he is the 'Prometheus' in the movie, depicted as the old man in the wheelchair in the trailer, later to be metamorphosed into the Engineer, which would offer him plenty of time to play himself as a younger man. My guess is he is one of the major characters in the film, the prime antagonist perhaps.

If this is true, it may only be a cameo: (From MTV interview at the Golden Globes)

“I’m only [in the film] for a minute, but it was a real honor to work with Ridley [Scott], to see what was going on,” he said. “I think Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace and Charlize Theron and everybody will do a really spectacular job.”
