Anyone think this is worth a blind buy? I usually don't do blind buys, and we'll probably rent this before buying it anyway, but how does it compare to The Hustler? I'm a big fan of that film, and even moreso a fan of Scorsese, and find his work in the 80's to be his most varied and sometimes rewarding efforts (Raging Bull, King of Comedy, After Hours, Last Temptation, etc.)
On a separate note, the fact that Color of Money (as well as Last Temptation) is getting a blu-ray release is a little light of hope for Scorsese's other lesser known films (like some of them mentioned above). And the fact that this is being called an Aniversary Edition means that we'll hopefully be getting serious upgrades from their feature only DVDs released when that format first came out. |

I'll pick it up because I have to have everything Scorsese, but it's always been one of my least favorite of his. Not that the execution is poor, it's just not an interesting subject to me.
And Amen to that. |

It's basically a sequel to the Hustler. Newman plays an aging Eddie Felson. It's really good. Maybe not as good as the Hustler, but pretty close. |

It's very well done and stands up very well to repeat viewings. Even if you find a little 'meh' the first time through you're going to want to watch it again. |

I wouldn't hold your breath on a digibook. The Color of Money is a Touchstone Pictures film. Touchstone Pictures is owned by Disney, who usually do not do digibooks. I'm willing to bet it will be in a regular Blu-ray case with a slipcover.

Paul Newman is at his best and the soundtrack is fantastic. The pool hall feel to the movie is great. The color of money does not live up to the hustler, especially the ending. Tom Cruise is a little annoying in this movie also. |

The Color of Money is a fairly well-crafted film, with well-established atmosphere and good performances from both Newman and a young Tom Cruise...though Newman's Oscar win here was surely at least partly owed for his career's worth of work, as well as his previous portrayal of this character in The Hustler. And to answer that second question of yours, this film is not as good as its 'prequel' - Scorsese took this on largely to prove that he could make a 'hit', which this was. That's no knock now, and it's still a good film worth your while; but it's certainly 'minor' Scorsese if you look at things that way in an oeuvre. Yes, the 80's was an interesting period in the Scorsese canon, no doubt due to some of the personal issues he was facing. But one of the most underrated features about Scorsese's canon, in my opinion, is its diversity. He's been labeled in the popular sense as a 'gangster', 'violent' director, but a quick perusal of his films reveal substantially more varied subject matter and genres. The Hustler had memorable characters besides Paul Newman (Jackie Gleason, George C Scott). I find Tom Cruise nowhere near as great as Paul Newman or the other actors in The Hustler. I was disappointed with Scorsese's movie. I would definitely recommend renting before buying. This is no Raging Bull.
