And regarding you're examples... Avatar was one of those un-explainable events that comes around once every few years. - Transformers Dark of the Moon made $50 million less domestically than Rise of the Fallen with higher ticket prices. - Pirates 4? Worse gross of all four films domestically, and didn't even catch Deadman's Chest's number worldwide.

Of course sequels are coming for all of these films, but only Avatar can really claim 3D made a difference in box office.

That's an extremely narrow point of view mate. I can't fathom why, but you're completely ignoring international numbers for starters.

Plus, look at the films themselves:

Pirates 4 was a**, pure and simple. Regardless of whether it matched the box office total of the previous films (domestically), if it wasn't in 3D, it would have made FAR less.

Dark Of The Moon didn't match the (again, domestic) box office of Revenge Of The Fallen... but do you recall the consumer backlash against that film? The fact that Dark Of The Moon made as much as it did, following the second instalment is a miracle in itself. Again, 3D definitely improved the numbers it would have attained otherwise.
