In terms of Criterions that I have bought and didn't at all care for, well, Insignificance is one that I recall. Bought it during one of the sales, popped it in, and had a really hard time getting through it all. It just didn't do it for me. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence was another I didn't really care for all too much, but I did like it a lot more than Insignificance.

Both Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Island of Lost Souls are among the best in breed for their respective genres and eras of filmmaking. Both were lost in the vault for many years and have a rich backstory of critical underappreciation and outright asset neglect. And both have been treated exceptionally well by Criterion. So don't be thrown off by what you read here. I mean, would you ask a tatar chef the best place in town to buy a cheeseburger? ![]() |
