In terms of Criterions that I have bought and didn't at all care for, well, Insignificance is one that I recall. Bought it during one of the sales, popped it in, and had a really hard time getting through it all. It just didn't do it for me. Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence was another I didn't really care for all too much, but I did like it a lot more than Insignificance.

Don't doubt Island of Lost Souls; great movie! Wonderful makeup for it's time.
Thanks guys, I think I am going to go with my original thought and get them both. I have a decent credit at a local movie/record store and can pick them up for about $11 each out of pocket.

Plus, I don't mind a little cheese in my early sci-fi

Well Wings of Desire is the my absolute best film of all time, so you get a "well done" from me.

Definitely get Crusoe mport... It fits the bill for what you described. It's worth it for the monkey, by herself.

Don't. Hesitate. For. A. Second.

Both Robinson Crusoe on Mars and Island of Lost Souls are among the best in breed for their respective genres and eras of filmmaking. Both were lost in the vault for many years and have a rich backstory of critical underappreciation and outright asset neglect. And both have been treated exceptionally well by Criterion.

So don't be thrown off by what you read here. I mean, would you ask a tatar chef the best place in town to buy a cheeseburger?

Thank you for the input! Makes me feel better about "pulling the trigger" on getting Crusoe and Island....much obliged!

Are you not happy with the quality of the transfers or with the actual films themselves? I ask because I'd like to pick up Branded. I have the old non-anamorphic Criterion DVD still. Is there an issue with the quality or do you just dislike the movie?

Better artwork and more features than 90% of the things they announce these days.
