I don't know if it is anything to do with this but HMV's prices seems to have suddenly sky rocketed. Just on their front page -

Tintin and King of New York - £22
Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Ghost Rider 2, Puss in Boots 3D, Underworld 4, Woman in Black - £25
Sherlock Holmes 2 and M:I-4 - £28!
James Bond Boxset - £120

Plus many increases on other blus dotted around the place (their steelbooks all seem to now be £25).

I hope this is some sort of mistake or temporary thing because some of those are an increase of over 50%.

with those prices on HMV seem to have added £5-£7 on everything.
Zavvi have bumped their prices up by £2 or £3.

Prices on Play and Amazon have no changes.

Indigo starfish still appears to be shipping Tintin - so maybe Amazon has yet to introduce the new prices.

With prices that that HMV will find it hard to move stock.

This is my concern. With their debt problems from the past year or so surely they need to be much more careful of this sort of thing. They're effectively shutting themselves out of the market this way; their brand name or loyalty card won't keep customers buying with them when their prices are so much higher than Amazon. It takes no effort for customers to click over to another site and save £10 on M:I-4.

The jokes on us, wake up please. Boycotting new-film purchases is the only way this industry will learn. Most of my latest films are 2nd hand. I visited hmv-leamington & films were £18.99 & some were £25.

The film industry doesn't care about us one iota.

The good times have ended & basically your all (me included) trapped consumers manipulated into paying extortionate prices. I've had enough of been treated badly & I really hope you individually are also tired of been coerced into paying big money for 'the latest shiny thing' too distract you from more important issues facing mankind.

This could also be part of the ideal of making 2D viewers pay for the three-dee failure to launch. Rather than make 3D films much more expensive, they force the larger populous to sublimate the market. Ensuring for a specific time-line, that the newer technology gets to remain in place for longer.

Remember we made this industry & we can break them. You only have to not buy for a small period of time before the cracks will appear & they lower the price of products down to below £12 per film. I pay £6-£8 usually now for 2nd hand films.

HMV have lost me as an occasional purchaser.

100 % agree with you. I am waiting for Fright Night, Real Steel and The Change Up to drop in price.

This price hike is extortion. Blu-rays are now £18+, even DVD prices have gone up. Its distusting and its certaintly stopped me from buying alot of new Blu-rays. The online retailers still tend to be cheaper though - like Amazon, but even then I've noticed price increases.

I'm just going to wait for price drops, with the exception of MI:GP which I have pre-ordered from Play.com and Die Hard 3.

Well I be honest I doubt prices from the major internet players will go up by much as long as there is competition.

The only films/tv shows affected would of been those below £15 so any that were over that like boxsets would not be in any way affected.

Amazon always charged VAT on all their products unless it was from their Jersey partner so their prices should not realy be affected.

Well firstly (and most OT) I don't believe for a second that prices are rising to push people to buy 3D films or make up for the "failiure" of that format. Take Tintin or The Lion King, two releases that would very probably have been £17.99 on release if it were just the 2D version available (looking at the respecitive studios other releases of a similar nature). Instead almost everywhere online had the 2D version at £14.99 and the 3D version at £17.99.The fact that there was a 3D version available seemed to push the price down for those who just wanted the 2D version, in no way were they punished. You could argue Hugo and Underworld, where the 3D version is included automatically, is pushing the product onto consumers who wouldn't buy it but the prices of those (£15 and £17) aren't an increase on what you'd be expected to pay anyway (when the same distributor has The Artist for £18).

Secondly, yes, HMV are pricing themselves out of the market and consumers only have themselves to blame if they buy from them and pay much more than they would anywhere else. But an online store raising its prices is not a sign that the whole industry is robbing us or trying to force products on us. It's not like the baserate for these discs has suddenly increased 50%. Nowhere else is suddenly adding an extra £5-£10 on its discs (with the exception of a couple of quid on some discs at Zavvi). This is one company trying to offset tax increases and postage charges that have altered their business model (EDIT - not even that, turns out it was almost certainly just a bug in their system). It's not an industry-wide thing at all. Besides which, a lot of discs are available for £12 upon release, it's becoming much more frequent as the market gets bigger. Maybe not blockbusters but a lot of middle-sized films (such as Drive) and it barely takes anytime at all for most discs to drop down to the £10 mark.

I understand what you're saying and the consumer market has always been based around the model of supply and demand. Your ethos of 'if we don't buy expensive discs then they won't price them that high' is fine (if unreasonable because some people don't mind paying that much). I sometimes buy secondhand discs and I often wait for prices to drop. So it's not that I don't agree with what you're saying but in this instance you're looking for a conspiracy from the industry that isn't there.

...and it looks like prices are (almost) back to normal on HMV now. So I guess it was just a mistake!

Excitment over, nothing to see here...

Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (steelbook and regular) £13.99 on HMV.com

Guess it was just a pricing error!

HMV, as someone said, seems to be erratic right now: King of New York steel is £12.99 and Demons 1 + 2 steelbook is £16.99. But MoC titles like Accattone and Gospel according to Matthew are £22, and Tintin triple play is £22.

I think there's a slight change on Amazon: Accatone is £16.47, which is unusual for a new release - could be the new prices coming in.

Well.... I saw GWDT HMV SB £13.99, put to basket and it went to £14.99. Just spoke to HMV online and they said sorry, you have to pay £14.99 basket price, although I could print screen and email £13.99 price (only £1 so wouldn't bother)

But, was told website is going funny at the moment because ALL prices are being changed to the new increase between now and this weekend.

Just a tip off.

Probably just an Amazon pricing quirk. Pigs and Battleships was £17.99 for a while before coming down.

Amazon always bump the price of at least one MoC after release.
