PS3 game regions

Before the PS3 was released there was all sorts of hype about games being region free, but now not one official source has been able to tell me that games are indeed region free. They all say the same thing, "we can't guarantee anything", I've gotten this response from ps3 customer support in the US, and in Singapore. And also is it true that there are really only 3 different regions for games and movies? because then games and movies meant for the US market can be played on Japanese and Singapore consoles, and vice versa.

Acording to PSM3 they are region free but unless you have a HD/multitv (PAL, NTSC, SECAM) then they wont work very well with your tv.
