THis might be off topic:

I was watching a comparison video yesterday (
)

I was wondering, how many times can Disney restore their classics without ruining them? I mean they had 3 restorations (or was it 2) for Little mermaid and now we have Blu-Rays. I'm assuming its going to be pop-up multi-Layered extreme 3D next or something new and they'll have to restore them again.

Are there any limits to restoration?

PS. I forgot to mention that the voice from the 2006 version was high pitched through the PAL region. The video uploader mentioned that and I forgot that. My bad.

That restoration is "fake". My platinum edition doesn't sound like that. He/she could have used a PAL source which is higher-pitched etc etc.

If you are impatient, you could import it from the UK, which get it in May.

Yeah, I know about the UK release. since I prefer the Greek dub though, I have already downloaded the BD on my PC and I also put the Greek dub (which I prefer) in so I'm good for the time being.

how is it fake if a PAL source was used?
and I'm pretty sure the last one is identical to my DVD though. It sounds 'sweetest' and closest to what I recall the DVD sounding like. Though I'd have to check when I get home to be sure

also, where was the supposed 1997 theatrical re-release?

fake because it it based on a PAL source and hence it is not an accurate representation of the restoration (I was bored to better-define my fake interpretation, hence the quote marks ) . PAL DVDs are all higher-pitched, so it's not like they "ruined here voice", it's a limitation of the source.

as I said, the platinum release (NTSC) sounds like the original and so does my HDTV-rip

I'm not too upset over it. I could import it from the Middle-east, I can stay with my copy etc etc. I have options

Plus, at least we're getting it

I thought the NTSC had the higher frame rate per second ie higher pitched?
UK/Pal is only 25 fps vs NTSC 30 fps

30fps but for 24 frame material certain frames are repeated (google the term 3/2 pulldown). With PAL the film is simply just speeded up.

I don't think the platinum release is even going to be released. From what i heard the little mermaid was the only Cel platinum edition film that never got a all out restoration like the other films did or maybe it was the only one not done by Lowry.

that makes no sense.
having more frames per second means it must be sped up to fit the extra frames in the same amount of tim

The fact is that PAL video is sped up and that causes higher-pitched audio. Here's a more detailed look at how that works vs NTSC video

I'm just glad Blu-ray has gotten rid of these problems

Quote:
This is how the Americans solve that problem:
The video standard in american television is NTSC. NTSC runs at 60 Hz. To make 60 Hz from 24 fps, you double the first frame, triple the second frame, double the third frame, triple the fourth frame and so forth. Now 12 of the original 24 frames in one second are doubled (12 * 2 = 24) and the other 12 are tripled (12 * 3 = 36).
And because 24 + 36 = 60, you can use this new framerate for conversion into NTSC. Unfortunately, since not all frames are displayed for equal amounts of time using this so-called 3:2-Pulldown method, the film does not run quite as smoothly as in movie theatres.

This is how the Europeans solve the problem:
Europe's television standard is PAL which runs at 50 Hz. Unfortunately, you can't make 50 from 24 just doubling or tripling every other frame, at least not evenly. So the film is sped up 4% to 25 frames per second, those 25 frames are then doubled, and the end result is 50 Hz.
And that's why almost all programs are too fast and too highly pitched by 4% in Europe. And it doesn't even matter if the program is english language, some european language or if it's a dubbing, everything originally made on film or NTSC is affected. Which is essentially everything except european television productions that are shot using PAL television cameras.
