Yes, Criterion should still have the (US) rights to F for Fake (and Mr. Arkadin)
As well as The Lady from Shanghai, TT could theoretically release The Stranger and/or The Trial as they're both public domain. However, they'd have to licence high quality prints. I'd love to see someone release a Blu-Ray of Chimes at Midnight. I think there's some right problems though, I went to a screening last year and it's a marvellous film. |

wow, not too excited about those choices I must say, but I'm sure some people will be happy I guess.
Enemy Mine I've never cared for, though it seemingly has a definite cult base; ditto for the 1990 NOTLD. The Sound and the Fury--though kind of a cool oddball choice--is apparently not a very good adaptation of the Faulkner novel, which is probably why the movie has been so completely forgotten until this announcement. It doesn't appear that it has even been released on vhs that I could find, much less dvd. I studied the novel many times during my education years, and I just don't know how much I could take anything less than a first class adaptation. I know one of my old professors didn't think much of it as far as Faulkner is concerned. that leaves Steel Magnolias, which I will be buying for sure. pretty sure my recent thought of maybe buying every TT release just went out the window cause there's no way I will but those other 3 titles. oh well. I am also having doubts about keeping up a complete TT collection. I suppose this was bound to happen at some point.
Enemy Mine is good, I saw it on DVD years ago and enjoyed it as a rental. I have not felt a need to revisit is since then, however. I was really hoping the next sci-fi flick was going to be Fantastic Voyage or even my second choice Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea. That would have set off a whole bunch of jubilant "dancing banana" smilies. Hopefully, FV and VTTBOTS are coming soon. I will get Enemy Mine, just not terribly excited about it. The other three I have never seen. The 1990 remake of NOTLD likely has a legion of cult horror fans to support it. I need to read more on this one since I have only seen the original. September looks like a month to celebrate the South. The Sound and the Fury appears to be another MIA title, and looks to be a Southern Gothic tale based on William Faulkner. Yul Brynner, from what I have read, gives a great performance along with Joanne Woodward. Definitely the most exciting of the four for me. Then there is Steel Magnolias, which I am pretty ambivalent about. I have always passed on seeing it. It is supposed to be a good film, but I have always categorized it as a "chick flick" about Southern women and have had no desire to see it. That is unfair, I admit, and I am open to hearing from any fans of the film here. Honestly, if it wasn't being released by TT, I wouldn't give it a second thought. This will be a completist buy for me, if I bite. Last edited by oildude; 06-09-2012 at 05:47 PM. |
