Are you on a fishing expedition looking for a reason to buy a new TV? Just get it if you want it and can afford it.

i don't think there's a scientific/objective answer to your question, if that's what you're looking for. i would recommend you test your ps3 at both resolutions and decide for yourself which one you think feels better - and i'd be surprised if you could consistently pick one over the other.

you won't notice the difference between any of the 3 (720p, 1080i, 1080p) on a 32" set...

Beg to differ.

One thing I notice is the additional depth and dimensionality of higher resolution images on smaller displays.

Less downconversion artifacts as well.

A: These are measurements of how many fine lines make up the picture.
You’d think that 1080p is obviously better than 720p. Trouble is, you won’t get a 1080p image unless you feed it a 1080p signal — and that’s hard to come by. There’s no such thing as a 1080p TV broadcast (cable, satellite, anything), and won’t be for years. Even most games, like Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, generally send out 720p (or less).
So the *only* way to get a 1080p picture on a 1080p set is to buy a high-def DVD player (Blu-ray or HD DVD). That’s the only way.
[D.P. adds: Even then, you won’t see any difference between 720p and 1080p unless you sit closer than 10 feet from the TV and it’s bigger than 55 inches or so.
And even then, you’re not getting any additional sharpness or detail. Instead, as CNET notes, you’re just gaining the ability to move closer without seeing individual pixels: “In other words, you can sit closer to a 1080p television and not notice any pixel structure, such as stair-stepping along diagonal lines, or the screen door effect (where you can actually see the space between the pixels).”]
Q: But a 1080p set costs a lot more than an identical 720p set, doesn’t it?
A: Yeah.
[D.P. adds: At this point, he showed me two plasmas, same brand, same size, same model line, mounted one above the other: one 720p, the other 1080p. The fancier set cost $2,000 more — and the image quality was pixel-for-pixel identical.]
you forgot about upscaling DVD's...it gives the 1080p capabilities a higher ceiling..

Question 1080i vs. 720p

Maybe a dumb question given the breadth of AV knowledge many of you seem to have, but I was wondering if given the choice, which resolution provides the better picture, 720p or 1080i?

I thought progressive (p) was kinda like doubling the interlaced (i) resolution, but then again, I must admit this stuff isn't my specialty.

Anyway, thanks for the help...

I prefer 1080i....I tried both and thought 1080i looked alot better....but others will say different....depends on ur tv and such.....jsut go with 1080p....cant go wrong there....spring for the one with 120mhz over the 60mhz...and make sure it has at least 2 if not 3 HDMI ports with a contrast ratio of at least over 1000:1, try for the 10,000:1 plus, make sure the tv is over 40' if u really want to get bang for ur buck, and do not use componant cables to hook up ur hd connection, only HDMI....

now, since this site is a few years old now...this topic has been covered alot....click on forums and use the search tool and type what ur looking for....if ur new to forums and didnt know, thats fine, I was the same way when I joined but u will recieve alot of flack from members for starting threads like these....just a warning.....anyways, welcome to bluray and the site...it rocks

I have a 720p Sammy. Am I better off sending it 1080i from my satellite box? What about my Blu-Ray player? I haven't tried anything other than 720p.

Thanks.

Thanks for the response and welcome.

people usually downplay 1080p, when they dont have 1080p money

I'm guessing you mean the question: Do I need 1080p?

There is no doubt having a 1080p source is better. Who knows what you'll have in the future, so why would you want less now only to be forced to repurchase content again later?

But, the display argument seems to frequently forget that it isn't a binary issue. There are people that can get some benefit from any resolution increase from 720p to 1080p. They may not see the FULL 1080p benefit, but why give up any benefit?

So, if you're seated and have visual accuity for 800p, is it worth it to you to pay for the 1080p to get that extra 80p? It's a personal choice.

Sure, if you're seated at <= 720p, THEN it makes sense to ask. But, are you never going to sit closer in any location you ever place the set?

Gary

^ Great answer. You just basically said that just because youre a certain distance away doesn't mean you lose all the benefits of 1080p, and listed an inbetween number.

I prefer to sit close to my screen and be engulfed in the film, so I always prefer high res everything.

you guys are right, i dont know why people say if you have a 40" tv its a waist of money to get 1080p. cause you cant tell the difference, how is that a waist? why would you go for something less?, I think it makes sense to get the best quality availible regardless if you can tell the difference or not.
