Default Animé films - any recommendations?

hi, i never got into anime movies before, but a friend at work let me borrow a movie called Appleseed and i thought it was great. it has me wanting to watch more now. so he also brought in Ghost in the shell today for me to watch. i really enjoy the anime movies with action and the gun fighting scenes. its like a new thing for me to watch these days.

anyone have any good recomendations for other movies out there? i know there are a few final fantasy movies out there to check out. thanks

Patlabor 1 & 2 are good. Robot movies.
Make sure you watch Ghost in the shell 2 if you like the first one. There is also a series you can watch.
Spriggen is pretty good.
Jin Roh is less action packed but is a great movie.
There is a new appleseed movie coming out on bluray either this month or next called appleseed: ex machina.
Princess Mononoke is pretty action packed but uses sword/bows not guns.
Akira is a great sci fi anime.
You could watch the cowboy bebop movie and give the series a try if you like the movie.

Can't really think of much else off the top of my head.

You should note though that most anime doesn't look that good. Ghost in the shell looks pretty good and the second one looks like appleseed. Most anime doesn't even look half that good.

If you are willing to get into series as well you might want to check out Gungrave. As far as movies i would suggest Armatige: Dual Matrix, (Its a sequel but i didnt care for the first nearly as much)

gundam 0083: stardust memory. not a movie - it's a 13 part miniseries, but quite excellent.

Spriggan
AKira
Escaflowne
Gundam 0083 Stardust memory ( Watch the old gundams, none of this SEED stuff)

Nasica Valley of the Wind
Full Metal Panic Famfuff
Cowboy Bebop

That should be a good start. Avoid any of the crap anime like One peace.

must see:

akira (started it all for me and my anime addiction)
ninja scroll
fist of the north star (the movie not the series)
princess mononoke
"X"
final fantasy 7:advent children (cgi)

if you like princess mononoke, you can also check out SPIRITED AWAY and HOWLS MOVING CASTLE.

anything with the name miyazaki attached to it is awesome, but they're not so much action and gunfighting sequences...

The 1st Armitage III movie sucked because they compressed 4 episodes into the length or 2.5. You can get all 4 episodes on a singlel DVD and it is friggin' awesome!

I'm also a fan of Escaflowne (both the movie and the series). Series has a lot more romance in it though.
Trigun (tv show) is fun
I really enjoy Macross Plus as well

The only ones that I can say that you will enjoy are these titles in this order:

Spawn (the animated HBO series) see here
Ninja Scroll see here
Iria Zeiram The Animation see here
Vampire Hunter D Blood Lust see here

I like action anime, and I would watch more but I don't like to sift through the crap to find a good one. Unfortunenly in my opinion there is alot of anime that doesn't appeal to me. The above titles do however and you couldn't go wrong with watching any of those.

And for those that are, don't forget that just because it wasn't part of Disney's deal doesn't mean "Castle of Cagliostro" (movie version of the old Cartoon Network "Lupin III" series) isn't pure Miyazaki...
(In fact, Manga had to reissue a "lookalike" edition strategically packaged to resemble Disney's Studio Ghibli disks, just to try and stem the confusion...)

And getting off of features and onto TV-based movie goodness, you may need to research a bit of "Urusei Yatsura" backstory and characters online--okay, maybe a lot of it --before watching "Beautiful Dreamer", but since we're talking classics, it's worth it.
It's more fun than you'll have at most serious Mamoru Oshii epics, trust us.

("Spawn is anime because it's serious"? "Ninja Scroll and Iria are cool because I found them at BB"??--Oh, lordy, what a 90's flashback.
FTR, Spawn--and not just because it's Canadian--is not anime. Spawn is Gargoyles with cuss-words.)

What got me into anime wasn't a movie but a series. Neon Genesis: Evangelion. This whole thread makes me wish that more anime was coming out on Blu-ray..... or should I say available in the US and not highly priced Japanese imports.
