I thought it would have to be something that Malick or Ridley Scott did.

...The question is slightly silly, Because the subject matter of a film largely dictates the style of cinematography that must be used...
...You can push the boundaries of course, and there is some wiggle room to play with...
...But choosing the best is hard because each movie sets it's own rules... ...Choosing the worst is much easier...
...The cinematography in Public Enemies is completely mismatched to the time period and makes it look cheap and modern [not to good effect]...

...I also thought the visuals of the Hurt Locker were both random, and completely manipulative...
...You can't try to establish a gritty realistic handheld documentary style...
...and then all of a sudden cut to slow motion bullet casings flying through the air in a display of super sentimentality...
...It betrays the fact that Kathryn Bigelow has no idea what she is doing...

...Having said that, Wally Pfister and Roger Deakins are both great...
...Allan Daviau and Douglas Slocombe are two of my favourites...

Depends on the type of film really. Different films need to evoke different moods and so different photography methods are used. A Ron Fricke shot or Terrence Malick directed film will usually be shot in a way that evokes a sense of beauty of nature and human interaction with it. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre used very different cinematography, but the way it was shot was perfect for it and the mood it was trying to evoke.

Totally agree, but I do love Jeremy Renner in it.

Totally agree on Wally Pfister, I believe Nolans films wouldn't be as great without him. (The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, The Prestige, Inception, and hopefully The Dark Knight Rises)

I would add House of Flying Daggers to the ones already mentioned. As goofnut said, Hero AND HOFD need remasters!

I like cinematography that is not distracting/in your face and adds to the effect of the movie. So John Seale's (DOP) Dead Poet's Society and James Crabe's (DOP) work on Karate Kid (1984) stood out in my mind. No gimmicks, just good quality cinematography.

[QUOTE=FutureWars;6071189]. It betrays the fact that Kathryn Bigelow has no idea what she is doing.

You're saying that she knows what she is doing.
And I wouldn't disagree with that.

On topic, Mel Gibson's Apocalypto had stunning cinematography!

I need to rewatch these episodes. I think I'm mesmerized by the great dialogue/acting. One of the best TV series ever created.

Blade Runner, the Departed, Australia, Fight Club. Road to perdition and American beauty have the best cinematography in my collection. One of my current favourite directors “Joe Wright” films also comes to mind (Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Hanna) all three are visually stunning in my opinion.
