Default Anna Karenina - Keira Knightley, Jude Law, Aaron Johnson

Quote:
Keira Knightley and director Joe Wright reteam for a third time on Anna Karenina, which Focus Features will release in select cities November 9. It’s got a pretty stellar team: adapted by Tom Stoppard and co-starring Aaron Johnson, Jude Law, Matthew Macfadyen, Kelly Macdonald, Ruth Wilson, Olivia Williams, and Emily Watson among others. Oh yeah, it’s from a novel by some guy named Tolstoy. It’s definitely got the look of Atonement, the last Knightley-Wright tie-up that earned an Oscar Best Picture nomination in 2008 (it has the same producers in Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner and Paul Webster). But it’s certainly seems more sweep-y, which the classic Russian novel certainly deserves.

I like the cast. It's especially good to see Aaron Johnson branching out after Kick-Ass to do stuff like this and Savages.
And I have to see this based on Tom Stoppard's involvement alone. After Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead and Shakespeare in Love, he's got a pass for life from me.

Joe Wright is tops, and IMO is one of the best directors out there right now. I was hoping he would stray away from period pieces but this looks good.

Set to debut at Toronto this year.

I was watching an interview and Joe Wright said he filmed almost the entire movie on 1 stage, pretty impressive.

Surprised this film has not gotten much attention here. Watched it this afternoon. Beautifully staged and filmed, albeit a bit gimmicky with the transitions which I found somewhat distracting, and briskly paced two-hour romantic period drama--which didn't allow much for reflection-- with an outstanding cast and great chemistry between the two leads-- Keira Knightley and Aaron Taylor-Johnson (he looked different with the mustache). While lacking in subtlety in the performances (in contrast, for example, the more nuanced acting in Scorsese's The Age of Innocence), it was an exquisite production, something I enjoyed and expect in a Joe Wright film. 4/5
