Nope, it would not be the first Indian movie. Satyajit Ray's The Music Room aka Jalsaghar is. If Lagaan were ever to be released by a US-based company it would most likely be Sony because I think they distributed the DVD in the US. But I doubt the film is high on non-Indian minds now.
