I honestly think it lost meaning starting with Bambi, hopefully they go back to two-disc blurays instead of one focusing on second screen

I'm more interested in what is happening in the background. I can stand fewer extras but I won't stand a drop in quality. Movies have started looking the same on the outside but what's inside the box, that's another story. Disney has really dropped the ball in their worldwide releases. Their home video is a mess right now. And it started with Fox and the Hound (as far as I can tell)

After some research I found that the 2 Movie-Collection of FatH contains higher-quality movies (even if that is by a small margin)

Fox and the Hound
MEX: AVC @ 32976 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 @ 3390 kbps
GR/CZ/PL/...(international release): AVC @ 23000 kbps, DTS-HD MA 5.1 @ 3392 kbps

Fox and the Hound 2
MEX: AVC @ 25138 kbps, DTS 5.1 @ 1509 kbps
FI/RU/PL/... (international release): AVC @ 23000 kbps, DD 5.1 @ 640 kbps

Germany got FatH 2 with a lossy soundtrack, Tarzan has a lossy soundtrack as well. I really want to see how Pocahontas and the Rescuers will turn out.

Usually I don't mind alot that Disney does, but the DVD packaging has got to stop, especially if you are going to release the DVD edition A MONTH LATER. They don't fit on my shelf that's fitted for blu-rays and I'm not taking the shelf off the pegs just to fit the ONE DVD case with a bluray in it!

In other news I want to know how many Pixar fanboys are crying that Brave only got a 76% on Rotten Tomatoes. Granted that site has alot of biased people/liars but the comments they mad aren't real happy. The Monsters University teaser looks good, despite the premise sounds bad

I was wondering about the Brave thing, too. It's given, I thought it wouldn't turn out as well-loved as other Pixar classics (because the story is, compared to other Pixar movies, strikingly unoriginal) but so far I loved all trailers and characters, so I'm still looking forward to it.

But 76% is a whole lot better than the meagre 67% it had two days ago.

I'll say what I said when Cars 2 came out--ie., that one "bad" Pixar is still better than Dreamworks' career record--but I'm glad I wasn't the first one to use the words "Strikingly unoriginal".
I couldn't help it, I did what we all did for movie spoilers before the Internet was invented--sneaked a look at the children's-book version at B&N--and yeah, the resolution's pretty predictable. If you think you know what "spell" happened, you already know how they're going to get out of it, and what we're going to learn at the end. (And frankly, Rapunzel already stole Merida's thunder as the definitive "Mo-om, don't cramp my style!" animated heroine....And so did her mom.)

Be honest, we've been a bit spoiled by Pixar's Oscar record--I don't expect this to have its reserved Picture slot next year, and it'll probably trounce all comers for Best Animated (boo! insult!)...
But this year, since I want to keep my 3DTV fed with rentals, I made the decision to only see two 3D movies at theaters this summer (Avengers, and Other One to be Named Later), and Brave just...doesn't seem to want to make the list for me. Merida's still cute, the supporting characters don't come off like nominal improvements on the "Dragon" vikings, but it's the first time I could wait to see a Pixar.
And that's from someone who DID go to see Cars 2 at a theater.

To clear up, I meant that Brave was only unoriginal compared to other Pixar movies. To sum up;

[Show spoiler]
  • Three movies about living toys and the consequences that them living brings them
  • A movie about a rat who wants to become a cook
  • A movie about a cleaning robot left alone on a post-apocalyptic world
  • A movie about repressed ants fighting against dictator grasshoppers
  • And a movie about a fish dad crossing the ocean to find his captured son

The whole Brave plot (rebellious princess etc.) seems rather.. unnervingly straightforward compared to this.

I, like you, really hope this is an improvement on HTTYD, not a Pixaresque rehash. But I guess I'll see. I have to wait till July for it to come to cinemas in my country.

Pixar really drove themselves into a pickle here.. With Cars 2 (which might I say, was a very good movie, not excellent in Pixar's range, but nonetheless good). To me, when I watch a Pixar movie, or any animated movie all I think about is these categories:

-How breathtaking is the backgrounds?
-How detailed are the characters?
-What is the meaning of the story?
-Was the meaning shown properly?
-Are there any characters worth liking?
-Is there anything in particular that makes me droll while watching it?
-Would I see it again?

Following those, I went to watch How to train your dragon, for example.

[Show spoiler]-How breathtaking is the backgrounds? Very.
-How detailed are the characters? Extremely. (hiccup's hair was flowing most of the film.)
-What is the meaning of the story? Don't take action without knowing the other side of the story.
-Was the meaning shown properly? Yes.
-Are there any characters worth liking? Toothless
-Is there anything in particular that makes me droll while watching it? Soundtrack, flying scenes, and the art book. and how hiccup lost his leg. Made it very realistic for me!
-Would I see it again? Saw it 5 times in theaters.

Overall: 10/10 for me.

Now for Cars 2:

[Show spoiler]-How breathtaking is the backgrounds? Very.
-How detailed are the characters? Very. Reflection in cars, especially in tokyo.
-What is the meaning of the story? Always stick by your friends, and if you are going somewhere your friend won't like or your friend doesn't really know what to do in it...
-Was the meaning shown properly? Yes, Kinda..
-Are there any characters worth liking? Italian Cars.
-Is there anything in particular that makes me droll while watching it? The animation.
-Would I see it again? Only if forced by little brother.

Overall, i would give it a 7/10.

Now for madagascar 3:

[Show spoiler]-How breathtaking is the backgrounds? Not really.
-How detailed are the characters? Meh.
-What is the meaning of the story? If you lie and tell people the truth, they will eventually accept you. Also, home is where the heart is.
-Was the meaning shown properly? Kind of.. If they focused on 2 plots instead of 10 it would have been better.
-Are there any characters worth liking? NO.
-Is there anything in particular that makes me droll while watching it? No, this was the first time i sat down through a kids movie without even laughing once. Very unrealistic characters, like the french officer.
-Would I see it again? No.

I would give this movie a 3/10. The movie was not funny, pacing was very fast. Inappropriate jokes for children. Used way too much adult songs. Children should not be introduced to Katy Perry. Also, you can do the impossible? Kids, please don't jump out of windows, because the chances are of you not getting hurt is impossible. Too many subplots, one was even deleted (One of the liemers wanted to overthrow their rulers) and the film focused a lot on 3D effects.)

This is my opinion of the movies.

Looking forward to you submitting Brave to these points.. is that the correct way to say it? I have no idea.

Will agree with you, IMO HTTYD was a much better movie than anything else put out by Dreamworks - it felt very Pixar-y and that dragon without teeth was just TOO FREAKING CUTE FOR WORDS!!! Although I did feel that the plot was kind of predictable they did a really good job at it! And the characters were likeable too. All of this is sorta lacking in Cars II and the general Dreamworks output (Madagascar / Shrek franchises especially. The early hand-drawn Dreamworks movies, not so much!)

Same goes for the Ice Age franchise, I only liked the first and the rest were just watered down with lame characters and lame plots. The only good thing about the sequels was that squirrel.

No Dreamworks movie is better than any Pixar movie with the exception of Shrek being better than Cars 2. This is not coming from a die hard fan of Pixar but rather a fan of animation.

Strangely, DreamWorks has created some awesome films these last years. Kung Fu Panda 1+ 2 and How To Train Your Dragon are on par with Pixar's films IMO (the better ones)

Totally forgot about Kung Fu Panda! +1, I really like those movies.
Spirit of the Stallion, Road to Eldorado and Prince of Egypt are the best Dreamworks movies IMO but I'm 2D animation biased (well, that, and the fact that all CGI Dreamworks is generally comedy with a couple minor exceptions, and those are genuine drama). Sindbad, not so much though.

I very much agree that it's the quality that counts!

But what exactly do you mean with: "Their home video is a mess right now"?...
As far as I know there are currently "only" two releases that were (very) disappointing: "The Fox and the Hound" and "Tarzan". So I skipped those completely, but all the rest... so far... are as great as ever: perfectly restored, high quality and even with enough extras, even though they dropped the second BD from the Diamond line.

The fact that some true Classic titles were dropped from the Diamond line, like Pinocchio, I think, is an insult, but well... I'm happy to have found the Platinum last year!

I'm talking about their worldwide releases. they are trying to minimize costs and maximize profits at the expense of quality. I won't be surprised if Pocahontas and the Rescuers use a better transfer in the US than in the UK for example. The second Pinocchio disc has been dropped apparently as well.
They've become very inconsistent for no reason.

That would be interesting!... Even though I've heard only good things about Pocahontas all over Europe. Nothing wrong with that transfer, was there?...

No. It was perfect. But a higher-bitrate release is always better.

I always had the impression you were either Japanese or something like that (Taei similar to Toei Animation )

It comes out in September in Greece.. I have no idea how I can avoid spoilers and reviews

taei would sound arabic, but the writing seems foreign. I love Toei animation, they used to make the Digimon movies I loved and One Piece.

You poor thing, I feel like a spoiled brat, having to wait only till next month.
I can't quite figure out why they don't just release it everywhere at the same time; it's not like people are going to fly to other countries because it's cheaper. Maybe the marketing strategy is that they can spread it out and gain more popularity as the movie spreads?
