You were right on that. I think the media was badly misjudging support last year of Joe Paterno with support for Sandusky. People backed Paterno because they felt he got a raw deal and didn't technically commit a crime himself. I've never heard of any Penn St. supporters back Sandusky. The jury got this one right. I'm just sorry the POS is already very old and might not spend too many years before he croaks.

I'm not sure O.J. Simpson's defense team could have gotten Sandusky off but this Joe Amendola really did his client no favors. It was one disaster after another.

I'll give the jury credit. They had a LOT to consider. I can't imagine how they dealt with the disgustingly graphic testimony and sorted through 48 counts.

Given the bizarre rulings over the past 12 months (Montreal man stabbing his children 46 times and not being found criminally responsible, Casey Anthony not guilty) , it's good to see the correct verdict come in.

I doubt it. Famous people almost never make it out of protective custody anymore since they wouldn't last a day in general pop.

Thing is protective custody can really be tough too. It typically means the inmate is in a small cell for about 23 hours a day with literally no contact with anyone other than guards. Just ask Floyd Mayweather or Conrad Murray (Michael Jackson's doctor) how much fun it us.

That's better than having the fear of getting poked in the butt anytime you get a shower. As asinine as it sounds, murders and (adult) rapists don't hold a high regard for sex crimes against kids.

I'm still deeply suspicious of the format. I'd always assumed they'd just use something like the BCS formula to determine the 4 teams for a playoff. But it sounds like they're going to use an appointed committee to determine the teams. That system might work for NCAA where 68 teams make the field, but when we're talking about only 4 teams picked there's potential for a LOT of bias to come into play. I'd be very worried if I'm a school like Boise St. I could still see smaller conference schools snubbed in this format.

I disagree , the basketball selection committee usually gets the four number obe seeds right or fairly close, no different here

What we know:
  • New play-off system will be installed for the 2014 season
  • New agreement will stand for 12 years
  • A committee will rank playoff teams based on won-loss record, strength of schedule, head-to-head and if a team is conference champion
  • Two semi-final bowl games will be played on New Year's Eve or New Year's Day at 6 rotating bowls
  • Three "contract bowls" include the Champions Bowl (SEC vs Big 12), Rose Bowl (PAC-12 vs Big Ten) and a TBD ACC bowl (likely Orange)
  • Three "access bowls" will be given to the highest bidder
  • Championship game (which will not be a "bowl game") will be played the second Monday of January and be managed by the conferences
  • Championship game location will go to the highest neutral bidder
  • The champions of the five major conferences (ACC, Big Ten, Big 12, Pac-12 and SEC) will be part of the six elite bowl games

What we don't know:
  • What is the bowl tie-in for the ACC (maybe highest ranked non-conference champ?)
  • What will the cost sharing be
  • Who will be a part of the selection committee

Another ramification of this decision is that the Big East is no long a "major" conference. This is going to have a huge effect on their upcoming TV negotiations and oh yeah, BSU has yet to formally tell the MWC that they are leaving (they have until Saturday). It looks like those who left the Big East over the past 10 years made a good call for at least the next 12 years.

So if UMD wins 2 games and pays 30 million, over say WVU who gets 9 wins and offers 10 million, my team would get "access" to that bowl!?!

No. That means that the Tostitos Bowl and Sugar Bowl would have to bid with the rest of the bowl games for access to the top teams. Of course, if Under Armor wanted to pay a couple hundred million to host a bowl at Maryland, then yes, your team would get access (tickets) to that bowl.

Gotcha (not that we even have that kind of budget )

If I was Boise I would just stay in the Mountain West. If they stayed San Diego State would likely stay as well (I don't think they would have to pay the Big East a buyout if Boise withdrew from the conference first) and the MWC would be just as good a conference as the Big East. The TV money wouldn't be as good, but at least they'd have a place for their non-football teams to play because right now there is nowhere for their Olympic sports teams to play since the WAC is likely to disband.

General question to the posters of this thread:

Considering all factors (e.g., additional weeks at the end of the season for these "fall" student-athletes, balance between the regular season games/postseason games, casting the net wide enough to allow for some parity in the postseason, the number of teams in FBS in the first place), how many teams would constitute your ideal college football playoff?

Obviously nobody likes the 4-team model as the "final" solution, but I am leaning toward 8 as the ideal model (16 would be nice, but I fear that 4 weeks/rounds of postseason play might be too much for the season...)

And I like the idea of playing the "playoff" games on the weekends and the "bowl" games (for the other misc. teams who were invited) during the week.
