There seems to be little to no RPG games for the computer running windows like Alundra http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...vkZwhkmkE&NR=1"
Also games like these. , Star Ocean These types of RPG games where very popular in the 90's. And with improved 2D and 3D graphics we have now I wonder why no one is making games like this for the PC running windows ? Last edited by nec1912; 06-27-2012 at 11:29 PM. |

Actually the PC has real RPGs (you know, as in "Role Playing Game")
What you and many call "RPGs" are Japanese Adventure Games. Zelda was never an actual RPG to start with. Now if you want RPGs, go check Divinity II Ego Draconis, Dragon Age: Origins, Elder Scrolls: IV & V, Star Wars: KOTOR, The Witcher 1/2, Baldur's Gate 2, Fallout 2 /3, Mass Effect 1, Fallout NV... |

They're fine for what they are, but the point is that they are not by en large "Role Playing Games". They just took the name RPG (because they had "stat improvement at best, but more generally just loot getting better") and ran with it.
PCs had the kind of third person, top down perspective games that you refer to once (Ultimas come to mind, as well as the magnificent Faery Tale Adventure), but they have evolved since into the hack and slash/ adventure games ala Diablo 1-3, Dungeon Siege 1-3, Torchlight, etc. Those also sometimes are listed as RPGs, but again, it's very "lite" on the role playing aspect ![]() Faery Tale adventure (1989) ![]() evolved into Torchlight (2009) ![]() |

It other way around the westerners RPG tend to be more action base and less story where JRPG is more quest base / action-adventure/and exploring and story like.
Diablo/Dungeon siege etc don't really have any role-playing, you just kill stuff, get better items/level up but there's not much actual ROLE PLAYING like games like Zelda or final fantasy that more story like and quest base / action-adventure . |

I think it may have to do with culture has westerners seem to want action base and get to playing. Where JRPG seem to want more quest base / action-adventure/and story. Also westerners seem to be more into first person shooter games , car racing , military games , scfi games , medieval type games than fantasy type games in the 90's talked about above and likes of Zelda or final fantasy . The 90's was big time for fantasy type games . Last edited by nec1912; 06-29-2012 at 10:24 PM. |

Especially true with Rockstars more recent games (L.A. Noire, Max Payne 3) where interactivity is more limited to cut scenes than their GTA games and Red Dead Redemption. Same with the Final Fantasy series, notably XIII. They aren't bad games, actually many are great games (Metal Gear Solid), but for a video game, it's a narrative crutch, and not a good example of video game storytelling, It's not because it's bad storytelling, but it's bad FOR video game storytelling. If you want to play an adventure game in the sense of Zelda on PC, you should wait for Dark Souls to come out. I played it on PS3 and thought it was an amazing adventure game; like the older Zelda games, it's vague and you can explore the world on where you go, nothing stops you except the world itself, nor warns you, which unlike Zelda, it's grim and punishing, yet very rewarding as you go through. |

Sakura Wars, Aeslia the Eternal, Utawarerumono, Koihime Muso, Moe Moe, Yumina the Ethereal and Tears to Tiara all come to mind for me when I think of RPGs for the computer. Even the Clannad Tomoyo After: It's A Wonderful Life game has a little bit of RPG gameplay. Though most(not all) of those have adult content in the PC version but the game console and/or handheld version does remove that adult content.
