Breaking Bad season 1 - black background behind subtitles? - Blu-ray Forum

I usually watch my discs with original audio. Not being a native speaker, I turn on the English SDH for English audio titles. With Breaking Bad there is a strange phenomenom with the English SDH: they are displayed with black background thus blocking a lot more of the picture than normal subs, where the space between and "behind" the letters is translucent. First time I've ever seen this. Strangely, the French subs are perfectly normal.

So is this my player messing up or does anyone have the same behaviour on their Breaking Bad discs?

The same thing happens to me. Definitely very strange. Looks like closed-captioning that you would see on TV. I can't check right now but I believe the problem is fixed on future sets.

It actually happened to me too when I watched episode 1 but only for the last 10 minutes or so. Then I started ep01 again(just to see what was going on) and this time there was a black background behind subtitles from the very start. Rebooted my player and everything was back to normal. No problems with ep02.

Not sure regarding Breaking Bad, but aren't English SDH subtitles usually presented over the top of the black bar?

As I recall, Breaking Bad has both English, and English SDH subtitles, try just the English subtitles (not SDH) and I believe there won't be any black bars.

Season 1 only has SDH subtitles.

Yeah, but that does not explain how come on one episode there's black bars and on other there's not.

Also I find the menu lagging quite much. If you select English subtitles, it suddenly moves to French subtitles. Something definitely not right there.

I always watch stuff with English SDH, but not one had the black background. OK, it's only 7 eps, so I already finished season 1, but I would deduct some stars for video if I ever wrote a review

Only English SDH and French.
