Blu-ray Question

Hey guys, I have a question. This is something that came to mind earlier. Can Blu-ray Discs support more than 1080p? Say Fox wanted to put Avatar on 4K on a Blu-ray Disc, would it work if TVs supported it?

I'm only wondering because if Blu-ray can't support more than 1080p, I'll dread the day they come out with Red-ray or something which would support more.

Yes the blu-ray could handle compressed 4K hd but you would still need new hardware just to play 4K, i guess the TV we use now would just downscale the image to 1080p, some of the new JVC camcorders need 4 HDMI cables just to play 4K in the TVs.

As 16mm said, yes blu-ray can support 4K content, the discs would have to be bigger than they are now, like 100-150 Gigs rather than 25-50, and blu-ray is all science, think about the spectrum of light, DVD players use a red laser while blu-ray players use a blue laser, blue light has a small wavelength of light, which in turn allows the laser to interpret more data, the only other color of light that would be even better than blu-ray would be violet

BD can't, at least as it is defined now. The top is 1080p30/1080i60.

It would definitely not be redray since redray is already trademarked (as red's digital distribution method). Also the way it works is CD's are infrared @750nm, DVD's are red @ 650nmand BD's blue-violet @405 nm. The smaller the wavelength the smaller the pits can be in the data layer and the more data you can have per inch. So what ever happens going back to red does not make sense.

As to a more general question, There is already BDXL in the BD-r specs a 128 GB disk. So if they do make it easily replicatable, a BDXL rom with a new CODEC may be more than enough for 4K and so like BD3D it might be an evolution of BD

Yes, the blue rays support the 4k content on the disc and you can easily upload the image.

What? No it can't. Yes you can put any kind of data on a bluray disc. It still won't play on any BD players if its not in spec.

Avatar wouldn’t be the ideal candidate as it was shot with HD(1080) cameras.
