(Hello all, I'm new to the forum. A little background...I used to work for kodak scanning and processing film. I'm currently a camera operator for feature films in new Orleans)

So guys, what happens when they start releasing 4k physical media? 8k?
RED is already making a 4k Project for the open market, not just theaters. The technology is there.
What are you gonna do? Re buy all your precious blu rays in 4k? I mean, you understand that blu ray still does not match the quality of 35mm scanned at full quality?...the max res that you can scan 35mm at, without some kind of distortion or sampling, is 4k. And with 70mm IMAX film, 8k. And do you think Sony is going to let that opportunity go to waste? Can you imagine the ads..."Get the full quality of 35mm film right in your home!"

Sony is going to milk blu ray until 4k is cheap enough to sell to consumers. Then all your blu rays are gonna look like DVDs.

And also, the last 3 movies I operated on were shot at 5K on the Red Epic...25% higher resolution than 35mm film.

The only thing that would convince me to go with UV is if they promised to auto update our movie files when the next tech comes out. Like future proofing. Either way, I can't justify dropping $15-$30 on blu rays now...just to re-buy them years later like we all did with DVD. Sony has this market cornered and right where they want us.
