Default VMD next?

Hey fellas and ladies,

So now that Blu has won, a few questions.

1) If it does defeat DVD, how many years do you all believe it will be THE format?
2) Do you think VMD has any likelihood of overtaking Blu anytime soon?
3) How did you celebrate?

Alan

As far as VMD goes it has no studio support, I am willing to say it does not sell well. You can have the best technology in the world but if no one makes anything for it, why would people buy it. A side note: VMD is a horrible technology

1) DVD will eventually become the SD format, anf Blu-ray the HD format. I don't see DVD going away per se, though with HDTV adoption continuing to grow, Blu-ray may become the dominant format in another 6 years or so.

2) VMD is a joke, and has no hope whatsoever.

3) No comment. Again... no comment.

VMD is a nonfactor.

Unlike HD DVD, DVD and Blu-ray can live side by side for quite awhile. There are people out there that think it must take over DVD right now now now or it is considered a failure but that is far from the truth. There are two very large markets out there, SD (64%) HD (36% = 50million) and the HD market is only getting larger each year. It will eventually take over as the markets shift, but for BD to succede it doesn't need to, nor does it need to overtake DVD.

DVD's real enemy is downloads. SD downloads are a lot easier to do and digital rentals will probably be the biggest sector. HD downloads are still aimed at DVD people IMO. They aren't near the quality of BD, but for DVD owners it might be good enough and again most likely only in the rental market.

The fact is, in the next decade if you want to watch a movie in the best quality possible at home, Blu-ray will be the only format to offer it. Imitators will be just that.
