I do value the opinions of a lot of people in this thread as I have discovered some fantastic films I might have simply overlooked because I didn't think they'd mesh with my tastes. I like what I like and if everyone liked the same thing, it would be boring. I do know several posters who have stopped posting in this thread due to the attitudes of others, ad they feel intimidated and unwelcomed due to their tastes in film though.

I, for one, enjoy films running the whole gamut from old classics of many generations ago to those made just this year. There are such rich experiences to be gleaned from movies no matter which time period.

"I eat when I'm hungry, drink when I'm dry" and apply that rule to my media consumption, keeping what exactly I "eat and drink" to just outside the limits of my taste -- life can't just be chocolate or broccoli alone -- hoping others do the same but not being concerned either way.

How poetic. That really is a good attitude to have, opening my eyes to experiences that I may not be familiar with, but which I may really enjoy. You'll never know if you like something if you don't try it first.

After a day's reflection I'm bumping October to three definites (Sunday Bloody Sunday got promoted), one interesting probable (The Forgiveness of Blood) and a box of DVDs.

It's still a light month but a pretty damn good one.

With all of the other releases throughout the rest of the year you won't hear me saying any month is light. However you might hear me say "can I borrow some money for food". I may starve to death, but I'll definitely be entertained while doing so.

You don't need to be a film scholar to appreciate films of all types. IMO many film scholars try and read too much into films. That always irritates me. I can't count how many times I've heard a 'expert' explain motivations for key scenes filled with deep meanings and historical allegories only to later hear the Director comment later and say all of that insight was baloney and the scene had a different meaning all together.

And this is where I think the problem is. The opinion of most film scholars can be extremely informative and spot-on but the way they sometimes explain it can be misleading. Their opinion is valid and rewarding as long as it stays an opinion, it is when they start forcing it to become a fact that the whole thing falls apart .

His post promotes happiness and dictates how the forces of the internet conspire to prevent posters on this forum from understanding each other and moving past their grievances and facing the cold truth of their opinions.

I'm a little bummed and confused by the video review. I know this isn't a top tier release for a lot of people, but I've come to expect so much from Criterion, anything less than perfection is a but disappointing. I'll still be getting it, though.

This is so sad and so tragically true. You would think that fans of classic cinema could just get together and have wonderful fan discussions and debates without having to have some sort of superiority complex kick in, but, that's just not the way it works. Not just in classic cinema mind you, but with any form of entertainment. No matter what kind of music you listen to for example, there's always going to be someone that says, "PAH! That's not real jazz/metal/swing/jam music!"

I mean, we're all here because we obviously have a love for the same thing... even though our tastes may vary wildly. We care about films and we care about film history. We care about the movies that are made as an art and made outside of the typical Hollywood mold of 'throw computer animation at your eyes until you submit and say ooooh, ahhhhh'! I'm sure most of us in here care about the intracacies of sound design, shot composition, lighting (or lack thereof), etc. etc. Yet, some people believe they're in a higher echelon of... who knows what? I don't understand where they think they are when compared to the rest of us, and I doubt I ever will.

In the thread like this one, I expect a bit of "snob" comments, I think everyone can without seeing it make a comment that others would translate as a "snob".

Where it really surprise me are in thread like Transformers where some people go in there to laugh at those who enjoy the movies. One post after seeing it and making a comment that you did not like the movie, fine that is alright. However post after post of baiting and making it sound like because you enjoy that movie you need to check your intelligent level for me is the perfect example of a "snob" who seem to think that he is so much better because his movie choice is so much more elevated
