The independent investigation report on Penn St. just dropped and as expected it paints an ugly picture of the most powerful people at the university, including Joe Paterno.

http://espn.go.com/college-football/...ildren-welfare

Quote:
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Hall of Fame coach Joe Paterno and other senior officials "concealed critical facts" about Jerry Sandusky's child abuse because they were worried about bad publicity, according to an internal investigation into the scandal concluded.

The 267-page report released Thursday is the result of an eight-month inquiry by former FBI director Louis Freeh, hired by university trustees weeks after Sandusky was arrested in November to look into what has become one of sports' biggest scandals.

The report concluded that Paterno, president Graham Spanier, athletic director Tim Curley and vice president Gary Schultz "failed to protect against a child sexual predator harming children for over a decade."

"In order to avoid the consequences of bad publicity, the most powerful leaders at the university -- Spanier, Schultz, Paterno and Curley -- repeatedly concealed critical facts relating to Sandusky's child abuse," the report said.

Sandusky is awaiting sentencing after being convicted of 45 criminal counts. The scandal led to the ouster of Paterno and the school's president.

Sandusky's trial last month included gut-wrenching testimony from eight young men who said he abused them as boys, sometimes on campus, and included testimony that showed he used his prestige as a university celebrity to manipulate the children.

By contrast, Freeh's team focused on Penn State and what its employees did -- or did not do -- to protect children.

More than 400 current or former school employees were interviewed since November, including nearly everyone associated with the football program under Paterno. The Hall of Fame coach died of lung cancer in January at age 85, without telling Freeh's team his account of what happened.

I'm shocked they had enough info from the 90s... It's insanely hard for big business to keep records for 5+ years from all the hands that touch it, let alone from 20+ years. So much more probably got covered up by Joe Pa. If you'd condone the abuse of kits in 98, you'd do it in 1978.

I've read through some of the 250+ page Penn. St. report today and there's some crazy stuff. Paterno waited a few days before reporting McQueary's witnessed rape to his higher ups because he didn't want to ruin their weekend. Ya, because it's not like child rape is anything worth disrupting your weekend. Class act Joe.

The NCAA better not look the other way. If over texting and summer jobs constitutes a lack of institutional control, this needs its own category. I think it was Dan Wetzel who pointed this out but, things like this can happen when althletics run the University

+1. OU got penalties several years ago for two or three football players getting paid for more hours than they didn't worked. The NCAA is so inconsistent. I was shocked they actually came down on U$C but then they look the other way half the time too. No consistency.

I just want to clarify things in interpreting your post. When you say, "they," are you saying?:

1. USC looks "the other way half the time."

OR

2. The NCAA looks "the other way half the time."

Because if you mean the former, you clearly don't know what you're talking about. If you mean the latter, then I think all of us agree to that.

Yeah, I can see that from JoePa's coaching point-of-view:

"If you can walk away from something, and don't have to be carried off, then it's not worthy to disrupt someone's weekend with."

Is OU supposed to be that good? Also, Texas was 8-5 last season. What makes Cowherd think that they're substantially better than that in 2012?

Oklahoma has been high on everybody's list. They seem to be a lot of years, but they have a knack for losing a couple games they should never lose.

FSU seems to get overrated every year with the preseason polls, especially so the Jimbo Fisher era. Same with Spurrier's South Carolina teams.

Oklahoma should be very tough this year. QB Landry Jones would have been a first round pick if he had gone pro and Kenny Stills is a talented receiver. They have a very good offensive line and a great secondary, but the running game and receivers outside Stills aren't great and their defensive line is nothing special.

Oklahoma also has to deal with a tough schedule. Their non-conference schedule isn't bad with their opener at UTEP (what is Oklahoma doing opening on the road against UTEP?) and home games against Florida A&M and Notre Dame. Texas will be a tough neutral site game and they have a brutal 3-game stretch to end the season with games at West Virginia, a rivalry game against Oklahoma State, and at TCU. Oklahoma will be good but I can't see them going undefeated.

Randy Edsall has one thing going for him, no matter how bad the team is the school is too broke to fire him and pay his buyout.

There goes my theory that Maryland is going to fire Edsall and hire Petrino.

Edsall signed a six-year deal at $2 million per year and if they fired him after this season it would cost $8 million. Maryland is completely broke and just cut 7 sports: men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s tennis, men’s indoor track, men’s cross-country, women’s water polo, and aerobics and tumbling. Edsall's job is probably safe for at least 2 more years and the only way he would get fired at any point is if the boosters raised the money.

Im sure they've got someone running numbers at the school if he gets two wins again they'll lose more money in ticket sales and donations then paying him off or at least I hope someone is looking at that from a cost impact standpoint.

What if he has another disastrous season? Man I really feel bad for supersix4 if he can't turn things around.

Source - http://espn.go.com/college-football/...-ray-armstrong

Quote:
Miami dismissed senior safety Ray-Ray Armstrong from the football program, the school announced Wednesday.

The school did not give a reason for Armstrong's release, but did say it would grant him a full release should he elect to transfer to another institution.

Armstrong was suspended for four games at the start of last season because he broke NCAA rules by accepting gifts from a former Miami booster. He missed another game later in the season while the school checked if other violations were committed when Armstrong had dinner with a friend who works in a public relations firm that handles professional athletes.

In seven games last season, Armstrong finished with 34 tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery.

Armstong was named to the preseason Chuck Bednarik Award list, given to the nation's top defensive player. ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper rated Armstrong as the No. 5 safety on his 25-man Big Board.
Good riddance. He's a really talented kid, but he's also a bad apple. We're much better off without his antics.
