Yea the sales people at Best Buy are terrible in dealing with Blu-ray and HD-DVD. When I was first looking at Blu-ray players they told me the reason Blu-ray was more expensive was because it played Blu-ray discs and HD-DVD discs, where HD-DVD players only played HD-DVD discs.

BBuy tries to use non-commissioned sales to its advantage, so people don't feel as pressured, since commissioned salesmen are seen as just trying to get you to buy the most expensive thing.

The backfire of their approach is most commissioned salesmen research their products extensively, since their pay depends on their knowledge. In my experiences, most BB salesmen are not very knowledgeable of their products. I am quite technologically adept, and I continually correct their employees. I once told a managaer I knew more than he did after hearing him misinform someone looking at TVs. I've heard a few say that since the PS3 is a video-game system, it won't do BR as well as a standalone player, which is just crap. The processing power of the PS3 is so much higher than the standalones. Some times they make me so mad because they just speak as if they know; they literally talk out of their a$$es some times. The people in the "Magnolia Home Theater" part are commissioned, and they know their stuff, but most of the education the regular employees get is just what's new and what they're going to push with sales.

Smart move. I was hoping MS would release the 360 w/ a built-in HD-DVD drive and HDMI, before February I would have bought it and had both formats, but they screwed the pooch and won't admit it. "We want to give our customers the choice, instead of forcing them into this format war," is about what one MS exec said. Yea, I was really mad when Sony said, "you can get a PS3, but it comes with a BR drive, so we're forcing you to buy one for $200 less than any other player." That's like being told that you can't get a promotion unless you accept the pay raise, as well.

Lightbulb I see dumb people..

Are you seriously voicing this complaint out loud?
A. Customers who have problems have a distinctly curious, yet suspiciously common problem of remembering things differently than they occurred.
B. How is it the salesperson's fault? Whatever happened to educated consumers?
C. It says HD DVD Player ON THE BOX!

Give us all a break.

While that might be true, look at how that effects salespeople. If consumers know what they need to know about the products they are interested in, why would we need salespeople?

Remind your friend to get the BD remote for the PS3 as well. BD is after all for the entire family.

I also find this to be very true in my local Best Buy. All of the people working in Magnolia will quickly tell you that sales of HD-DVD are crap, and they always recommend Blu-Ray when helping put together a Home Theatre System. You definetly hear some wierd stuff out on the regular sales floor though.

To do what they do now: Manipulate customers, so they change their mind.

Educated consumers don't shop at Best Buy. First off if they are educated consumers they know that they can get whatever it is they want online for about 20% cheaper than Best Buy. Secondly the educated consumer knows that Best Buy doesnt carry the much better Specialty brands therefore they will go elsewhere to get a better product.

Best Buy is geared much more towards the UN-educated consumer. That is why the salespeople should know what they are talking about. So according to your argument here pilots shouldnt really have to learn all that much about flying a plane just the basics, because clearly what passangers wouldnt do their own research into flying before boarding their flight?

Most people who are technologically uninformed will listen to the salesperson. That's the plain truth. I mean, my parents wouldn't know the difference between Blu-ray and HD-DVD - they don't even know what both are in the first place. So if a salesperson told them that the 360 add-on would play Blu-ray, they'd believe him, thinking that it's part of his job to know these kinds of things.
