I agree. It's a more interesting film to study than to engage with, I think. I like how it establishes ideals and at the same time deconstructs them. I like how he elevates philosophical ideas and challenges preconceived notions on existence and on dieties.

The film itself is confused - there is a tension between believing in a diety and rejecting it. It may just be the very best example of an agnostic film.

Read The Leopard, and watch the film if you haven't already. Make sure it's the Italian version as the English one is literally a hack job. Visconti did a fantastic adaptation and went right down to the nitty gritty for details to stay true to the novel. Too bad more film adaptations weren't like that.

I agree with this opinion, but I don't think it's necessarily that clear cut about believing or rejecting. I see it more as a young man asking questions to God and trying to figure out since the belief system is to believe in a good God, why bad things happen to good people. He does, eventually find his way back towards the way of grace/God. As for me, I definitely connected with the film on many emotional levels. I could perfectly relate to young Jack and his issues with each of the parents.
To the individual who thinks that the actors and director are conveying different ideas makes sense, sorta.. Malick is known for just giving the actors an idea and has them just act naturally as he films everything, sometimes when the actors don't even realize it. Malick builds his stories through post work as he constantly re-edits to find the exact theme he is trying to present.
I absolutely loved this movie. I can see how some would be turned off by "Where are you God? Why this and why that", but it totally worked for me. Really anxious to see To The Wonder hopefully by the end of the year and not beginning of next.

I think Tree of Life won Cannes due to politics surrounding Von Trier, whose Melancholia was the superior film, and this is coming from a huge Malick Fan, who decided to see Tree of Life on his 30th Birthday.

Another poster mentioned the fact that it keeps the viewer at a distance -- that it's an easier film to study than to be engaged by. I'd say that's true the first time.

After seeing it theatrically, I was astounded by how much more moving the film seemed the second time. It was one of those experiences that led to a complete reevaluation. Not to be dramatic, but in this case "reevaluation" doesn't just refer to the film itself, but one's life after the film is turned off.

I know some people call it pretentious; for me, it's stupendous.

Hard to argue against such air tight logic. I figured Malick defense force might bite me, but that's OK, I've seen both films, and made up my mind.

I broke down and ordered Le Havre from B&N. Despite being 5 bucks more than Amazon, once shipping and taxes are applied, it ended up being a few dollars cheaper. Also, I ordered a cover for the Nook I'll be getting in October. They're on sale right now and there's no guarantee it will still be that price or in stock by then. Funny how they can sell me nook accessories but not the device itself. At least when I get the cover it will only be a month before I get the actual device due to the slow shipping.

The wait will be worth it, my dear! I'll be curious to see what you think about it.

Out with my wife and 12 year old son today. I get Fridays off during the summer, so we had a late breakfast and she's clothes shopping at Marshall's. As much as I can't afford any more, there's a B & N nearby, so I'll likely take a quick look.

As for beautiful, you are right of course it is beautiful as you would expect from any Malick movie. I don't know if you can call him a genius at cinematography but he would come close.
I think some credit has to be given to the amazing cinematographers he uses to work with. Emmanuel Lubezki and Nestor Almendros being the perfect examples. They do amazing work with or without him .

What of the Nook cover, the Nook, or Le Havre? I already watched Le Havre and was kicking myself for missing thr cheap Canadian preorder as I watched it AFTER that promotion ended. I had no interest in it until Saul said it was most excellent. He was more than correct.

The cover's nothing special, it's a leather ebook reader cover set to look like old-school two-tone hardcovers. It's lime green with a turquoise spine. It's called Huxley after Aldous.

The Nook itself should be a huge improvement over my Sony. I've only used my mother's sparingly, but the speed and contrast are much bette, the screen isn't glarey at all, and it's much lighter.

I'm still waiting for my orders from the beginning of thr month. It's only thr Samurai Trilogy I haven't watched yet out of the 5 releases I ordered. Here's hoping they come soon. Me mam is getting impatient waiting for Pillars of the Earth miniseries, which I just so happen to be reading (finally!) right now.

I haven't watched them yet. Added them to my wish list, along with Leningrad Cowboys, who I actually listened to and thought were legit before I found out they were essentially the European version of Spinal Tap . I've been holding off on EcliPse sets as my BD wish list was so massive! If B&N don't totally shitcan the next few sales, I should be able to start grabbing some Eclipse sets (I only have about 15 on a wish list at the moment, including several people don't even talk about.)

I agree with you. I much preferred Melancholia over Tree of Life.

You mentioned that the Sony eReader battery ran down quickly. Do you keep the wireless on all the time or kill it when you don't need it? My wife says that she gets two+ weeks out of her Kindle battery when she kills the wireless, instead of about a week, when the wireless is kept on constantly.

Lucky. I really wanted to pre-order a few titles. I tried with Tenenbaums at 2 locations and ended up with no dice because it says the in store price is $20 but ship to home is $34.04.

Where in the country are you located? Just curious.
