All-time, I still prefer Halloween's elegant simplicity, but The Thing has those benchmark FX and a more colorful and compelling cast of characters.

Halloween is a well made film for sure, but The Thing is just better overall IMHO.

I'd rate Carpenter's top 5 like so:

1) The Thing
2) Escape from New York
3) Halloween
4) They Live
5) The Fog

Surprised the news didn't mention the free poster offer, I was starting to think they weren't doing one for this until I checked their website.

I really want those four posters but I don't want to pay full msrp plus shipping... Tough decisions

Carpenter's best film is usually the one you're watching at the time (there are exceptions). How can one really compare Big Trouble in Little China to The Thing and Starman to Halloween?
That being said Halloween and Big Trouble in Little China hold a special place in my heart.

I'm not entirely sure but based on Shout Factory's announcement regarding "Death Valley" and "The Island" getting their own separate Blu-ray releases, they mentioned that those titles would be utilizing their original poster art and nothing about custom artwork being made. It may be very possible that the Scream Factory titles that have custom artwork are the ones that will only be getting slipcovers with them. I hope I'm wrong as I'd love to see the whole line released with slips, it would just make the whole collection flow together very nicely.

OMG that cover is epic! I just got a few questions, sorry I know they have been asked. When does this go on sale to preorder? And can you only order through their site? Also I never got to listen to it, but I heard from somewhere that there is a commentary with Piper and Carpenter. Will that be included? Thanks.

I rewatched Escape recently. Still love it but not one of my fave's of his

I'd go (and this is personal preference, not "the best"):

1) The Thing
2) They Live!
3) Big Trouble in Little China
4) The Fog
5) Escape from New York

I'd then have Halloween and Christine tied for 6th and my guilty pleasure Ghosts of Mars behind that but then I'd also have to fit in Assault on Precinct 13

Pre-orders for "They Live", which includes the limited poster, are already up at Shout Factory's website. I imagine Amazon's pre-order listing should be up within a few days. Shout Factory aren't porting over any features from existing editions, they are crafting brand new ones but if I had to guess I'm sure they'll be courting Carpenter for at least a commentary. It'd be ideal if they got Roddy Piper and Keith David to join him though. We already know that they've shot an interview with Carpenter for the disc so the chance for a commentary seems likely.

My mistake. Still more than what I'd pay for what I consider second (funhouse) and third (terror train) rate movies (Halloween 3 and they live are obvious purchases). Don't get me wrong I still enjoy them all enough make them apart of my horror library, but over $15 is a stretch. I would probably cave for $20 each including posters, but there's still shipping which adds a couple of bucks per disc.

Living on about $40/month entertainment budget forces these hard looks and penny pinching

keep an eye on Shout! Factory's site [or facebook page] because sometimes they offer the best price when you buy direct from them. some of the Mystery Science Theater DVDs have been this way.

from Shout! Factory's facebook page
SPECIAL OFFER: If you preorder from us you'll get a limited edition 18" x 24" poster of this kick-ass design not available anywhere else.

Extras are still in progress but we can now fully confirm that we've already shot an interview with Carpenter himself. More specific details on special features to follow in the next couple of months. Till then, keep chewing bubblegum and kicking ass!
