I'm a little surprised he didn't get a one game suspension just because of how easy their schedule is to start the season. They start off with a game against Grambling State and then play Kansas, who is probably the worst BCS conference team in the country. They could easily have held him out of the Grambling game and then let him face Kansas and get accustomed to game action before a somewhat difficult game against Virginia. Considering how big a drug problem the TCU football team has I would have hoped a failed drug test would be an automatic suspension.

Is Kansas really THAT bad? I know Weis took over there and thought he was pulling in better recruits than the school had before he got there. Guess it'll take him time to turn around that program.

His 2013 recruiting class is currently dead last in the Big XII. I assumed he'd improve the program too, but that isn't a good start. (I know it's still early for the class)

I still don't understand why Kansas gave Weis so much money. Weis got great recruiting classes every year but still failed at Notre Dame, which has one of the richest histories in college football. He then went to Florida as their offensive coordinator and they had the 98th best total offense in all of college football. At Kansas he's not going to get 1/10 of the recruits he was at Notre Dame, yet Kansas still felt the need to give him a 5-year deal worth $2.5 million per year. Weis has never shown he can be a college coach and is still living off of what he did with the Patriots years ago.

I think they gave Dave Campo a lot of money too in order to get him as D-Coordinator. Sounds like Kansas was just desperate to make a splash by bringing in some big name coaches in hoped of revitalizing their program. Doubt it will work out. Kansas isn't even the best Big 12 program in their own state.

VT AD Weaver wants to initiate a ACC v SEC match-up simliar to the failed PAC-12 Big Ten matchup:

Quote:
With three intrastate ACC-SEC rivalries — Florida State-Florida, Clemson-South Carolina, and Georgia Tech-Georgia — permanent schedule fixtures, Weaver’s idea is for the remaining 11 schools in each conference to rotate home-and-home series. A complete cycle would take 22 years, an eternity in this era of hourly realignment.
http://www.dailypress.com/sports/tee...tory?track=rss

Thoughts? Could it work for the ACC and SEC where it has failed for others?

it would be great for the ACC if they can be competitive, but i'm not sure i seethe benefit for the SEC (atleast up front). SEC teams already travel to play tough preseason games, so it might be a step back for them. I see why the ACC wants it though. Helps lure better recruits, raises the conference profile, and eventually the SEC would benefit from that via better competition (which reflects well in the polls when you win).

on another note:
Clemson's AD is stepping down, i remember being on campus when the search for the current AD occurred... i'm glad he's leaving time to get it right and transition but his signature highers are just starting to entrench themselves. Will be an interesting next few years at Clemson.

Lane Kiffin needs to learn that USA Today is going to call you out if you say something they deem untruthful about how you vote in the coache's poll.

Quote:
Southern California football coach Lane Kiffin was asked this week about voting in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches' Poll.

"I would not vote USC No. 1, I can tell you that," he told reporters.

But he did.

In his first-ever ballot as a voter in the poll, Kiffin voted his Trojans as the preseason No. 1 team in the nation.

His quote about the poll came in response to being told that Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez had voted USC No. 1.

Each coach's vote normally is kept confidential until the final vote of the regular season under an agreement between USA TODAY Sports and the American Football Coaches Association. However, when a voter volunteers false or misleading information about his vote in public, then USA TODAY Sports, in its oversight role as administrator of the poll, will set the record straight to protect the poll's integrity.

Kiffin told USA TODAY Sports by phone Thursday night that he didn't think the quote misrepresented his vote. By saying what he did, Kiffin said he meant that he wouldn't vote USC No. 1 if he were in the media or coaching another team. Because of NCAA-imposed scholarship restrictions, USC is operating with 75 scholarship players, 10 less than the regular maximum of 85.

"We have less players than everybody else," Kiffin said. "So looking at it from the outside, I wouldn't (vote USC No. 1). Did I? Yeah, I did. That's not based off of 75 vs. 85. That's based off of (USC players) Matt Barkley, T.J. McDonald and Robert Woods and Marqise Lee. When everybody has the same record, I can't go into a meeting with our players and have them say, 'You put that team and that team ahead of us.' That's why I did that."

ahhhhh the oldest trick in the book. Shine a light on the program while attempting to lower expectations.

Something is apparently up with LSU All-American cornerback Tyrann Mathieu. A press conference is going on and there's speculation that he may have failed a drug test, and he's already had 2 failed drug tests in his career.

Edit: Major news, Tyrann Mathieu is no longer a member of the LSU football team. He was dismissed from school for a violation of team policy.

1. how stupid can you be? granted, it won't effect his draft stock at all because by the draft this will be forgotten in typical football fashion (i.e. Dez Bryant, Blackmon, et cetera) but still, come on.

2. so LSU sends off their best defensive back (if not best PLAYER) for... failing a drug test, yet TCU keeps their druggy and doesn't even discipline him? ouch. that looks bad for TCU and other programs. yeah, this guy may have failed more than one, which i'm sure didn't help, but still.

I'm hearing that if it's a third failed drug he will not be eligible to play for any Division 1 team until 2013. And I absolutely do think it will hurt him in the draft. I think all Blackmon had was one DUI and Bryant's issues were badly overblown. We're talking 3 failed drug tests here with Honey Badger.

Yeah, I think a better comparison to Mathieu is Janoris Jenkins. Before the 2011 season Jenkins was considered a likely top 10 pick. He was then kicked off the Florida team and played at North Alabama last season and ended up being the 39th pick in the draft. Jenkins had more baggage than Mathieu, as he had a couple arrests in his college career in addition to failed drug tests, and teams were worried because he already has 4 children, but a year away from major college football is definitely going to hurt Mathieu's draft stock. He was a likely top 5 pick and now I'd guess he'll be in the mid-to-late teens at best.

Kiffin's explanation is plausible. "His quote about the poll came in response to being told that Arizona coach Rich Rodriguez had voted USC No. 1." He didn't say that HE, himself, wouldn't vote USC #1. He said if he was a coach for another team or a member of the media, he wouldn't vote USC #1, based upon only 75 scholarship players, instead of everyone else's 85.

This is such a non-issue, and it's humorous how Grant Teaff is making a mountain out of a molehill. Also, Mr. Teaff appears to have violated the confidentiality of the coaches vote. Only the final poll for the mythical national champion is supposed to be released to the public. This actually speaks much more poorly for Grant Teaff than it does for Lane Kiffin IMO. At the very least Teaff should have contacted Kiffin FIRST to get his explanation before going half-cocked to the media with his accusation. What a complete tool.
