Official - Universal already gearing up to join Blu-ray

At least one of the two studios exclusive to HD DVD is already gearing up to join the other team.

"While Universal values the close partnership we have shared with Toshiba, it is time to turn our focus to releasing new and catalog titles on Blu-ray," said Craig Kornblau, president of Universal Studios Home Entertainment.

"The path for widespread adoption of the next-generation platform has finally become clear. Universal will continue its aggressive efforts to broaden awareness for hi-def’s unparalleled offerings in interactivity and connectivity, at an increasingly affordable price. The emergence of a single, high-definition format is cause for consumers, as well as the entire entertainment industry, to celebrate."

Yes, this is what I waiting to read. Now we need some hard dates. Time for some announcements and some Spielberg movies, I am so excited to see movies like Jaws, Jurassic Park, and E.T in HD you have no idea.

Isn't it ironic that HD DVD's most staunch supporter besides Toshiba is the first to switch?

Universal, I expect menus themed to the movie, high quality video and lossless DTS or Uncompressed PCM.

Those cookie cutter menus from HD DVD will not cut it.

Not that it's surprising, but here is what Engadget has posted:

Not a whole lot to go on right now, but German site HDTV Praxis has it that both Paramount and Universal will now make the obvious choice and publish their films on Blu-ray. Notably, this follows hints seen in certain Circuit City databases as well as word that we've received noting that both studios would indeed make things easy on everyone and simply support the one format still standing. Interestingly, DreamWorks isn't mentioned in the linked article per se, but we've all ideas it'll be following suit shortly.

That's friggin' great news.

I will welcome Universal in HD into my home as soon as possible, something I have yet been unable to do without importing.

When Paramount announced they were going to support DVD, they announced it, and then made title announcements at a later date.

Universal probably needs to get their feet wet with Blu-ray replication before they announce titles (unless they already have).

Big question for me is whether we'll just see Warner-style efforts from Universal and Paramount where the blu-ray version is essentially the same as the HD-DVD copy, or if they will do fresh encodes to take full advantage of the format.

I find it funny that Paramount is the last one to support HD DVD. Even Toshiba bailed before they did.

Ok, I am saying this again. I bought a blu-ray player mostly on the strength of one movie which impressed the hell out of me. Though I desire many other titles, I am waiting for that ONE move.
