The players will naturally come down in price over time. I don't think the manufacturers should cut into their profits simply to "force" adoption. There's no reason they would want to do this.
I don't think studios need to lower their SRP on discs either. Prices on a Blu-ray should be a bit higher than the standard DVD version. B&Ms are charging more because the turnaround for the Blu-ray version isn't nearly as high as DVD of any given film. The actual SRPs are only about $5 difference. If retailers could set the prices of new releases around $19.99-$24.99 I think the format would look more attractive to J6P. But, again, this should happen naturally. As Blu-ray sales increase the "stocking" cost per disc will come down, which will also lower the price for consumers. It all just takes time. |
