I might just go ahead and buy that German box set. It's 22 euros (around £18, I believe) on Amazon.de and it doesn't seem to suffer from crappy packaging. Does this U.K set even include the re-masters?

Their shipping costs are quite reasonable, especially if you live in the U.S because Australia Post charge a $9 surcharge for anything over 500 grams going to the U.S, however JB don't apply the surcharge to their orders. Usually they ship out orders pretty quickly. Because you live overseas and the package will be handled more, when ordering, just write in the notes section that you would like it/them sent in a small box, and everything should arrive fine.

Yes, the UK set includes the remasters of 1-3

So... what's this about new transfers?

My heart sinks whenever I hear that somebody has been messing around with the Rambo films. The sound is never particuarly good and, in the case of Rambo III, the Russian/English captions are seldom handled properly. Only the most recent blu-rays in the US got it right, the DVDs never did.

So has anybody seen/heard these things to confirm the quality and accuracy?

I havent seen them yet but from all the comments Ive read on various forums, only the first film is an improvement on the old transfer - not much between the 2nd but the 3rd is worse. I dont know about the audio.

Screencaps comparison.

First Blood is available seperately

The old German release has the same cover but without the age rating on the front.

What's the situation regarding subs for the Russian dialogue in Rambo III?

US BD has them.

I'd say all the new Rambo 1-3 have their good and less good moments compared to the old transfers. Personally I like the new Rambo 2 the most of the new transfers, because of the improved greens in the jungle. On part 1 the framing are better in some shots in the new BD. Part 3 I just briefly compared and can't say anything for sure , maby the older transfer is little better. But I have no idea of the russian translations because this is my least intresting Rambo film..

Are the titles really off-centre in Part II?

It's quite noticeable in those comparison screenshots.

Guys, i ditched my Region free Lionsgate copy of Rambo 3 after it went the way of the dodo due to the problem with a number of older Lionsgate BD titles, and bought the Optimum region B disc. No way is the Lionsgate transfer superior to the Optimum disc, even though it loses the audio commentary from Director Peter Macdonald. I'm glad i upgraded and wish i had done it sooner.

So which is the definitive version? Keep hearing conflicting views, I thought these new transfers (the ones in the UK grenade and EU sets) were superior to the current UK Optimum and US Lionsgate ones?

I'm looking to finally bite the bullet and just order the UK grenade set, any information will be appreciated.

Thanks

What problem was this? I hadn't heard of laser rot (or similar) affecting BDs. I haven't checked my Rambos for a while.

It happened to my The Devil's Rejects Lionsgate Blu-ray and I had to get another one. Many of Lionsgate's earlier releases tend to crap out after a while.

They both look awful. In fact, I'm watching them right now and it's a toss up over which one is actually the worst. Riddled with effing DNR. All three of the original UK discs are dire, IMO.

Taking the new discs out of the equation and comparing those three original UK discs to the US trilogy set, the only one that's even remotely acceptable to me, is the US transfer for First Blood: Part II and we're talking barely.

Anyway, I've ordered the Scandinavian set, as I have nothing to lose at this this point.

Blu-ray's can suffer from disc rot. Here's a picture of one from my collection that has started to rot.

IMG_4182.jpg

A few more blu's I have owned have had the same issue. I have repurchased the affected discs just recently.

Yikes, touch wood I haven't had any in my collection do that. You say you've had a few, is it maybe affected by climate? Have you ever tried contacting respective companies with pictures of the discs to see if they would replace them?

Who knows, climate possibly could be the cause, but they are stored well and with care. Temperature wise, in my apartment it wouldn't go below about 6 degree celsius in the winter and above about 40 degrees celsius in the summer. It may even have been triggered off by my hands, as they sweat sometimes. When they are I always wipe my hands before handling my discs, however sometimes the heat coming from my hands causes a small amount of condensation to form on the bottom of the disc around the edges where my fingers are positioned.

I thought about contacting the distributors to get replacements, but in the end I decided not to bother going through the hassle, especially since it possibly could be my fault. It was quite cheap to replace the discs.
