I'm not advocating this, just confirming that it looks way better than up-converted DVD...

also the broadcast on HBO HD looked spectacular and that's where I think it was pulled from...
How did you burn it on a DVD9? Ive been trying for ages! Does it play on your BD player?

Yes definitely NOT 1080p. Maybe 720p or 1080i, but to be honest it merely looks like an good upconvert. Too fuzzy and colors are off or washed out, typical side effects up an upconvert. Therefore no where near as AWESOME a quality as it could be once Lucas puts out these bad boys of 50GB blu-ray discs. I am also hoping for 7.1 LPCM Audio. Lucas always believed half the experience was in the sound.

I think I just wet myself thinking about it.

Wasn't impressed.. looks like my sony $130 dvd player with 1080i upconvert did that.. meh. Hope it doesnt even come close to looking like that on BD or I'd have to give a coal tier PQ level.

But yeah many dvd come from high definition transfers.

In an article published in sept 2004, they mention that the movies (IV, V, VI) were mastered in high definition from the celluloid...

"Beyond a stellar DVD, Lucasfilm now has a high-definition master stored in its vaults that won't degrade as celluloid does. The master can be used to make new film prints and high-definition DVDs."
http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/te...tar-wars_x.htm

The fact that they have the masters does not imply that they will release it to HD media anytime soon...

I saw these on Sky Movies HD, and the new (prequels) looked truly excellent... Pity about the plotlines!!!. The older ones did not look so good... to be honest they didn't look much better than a DVD. I thought that IV, V & VI were upconverts when they were on... Not really impressive at all.

I haven't tried...I've only tried it in my Samsung up-conversion player....this one plays almost anything and up-converts real well...(it's the Samsung 2nd generation of the up-converts)

it looks the same as it does on my comp...and it's an .mkv file..

Ive seen the Star Wars movies on HBO HD a bunch of times, especially when I first got my big screen. I can wait a few years for them in blu. Would rather see the Planet of the Apes films or the Alien series first in blu.

do ppl expect bluray will have that much higher bitrates/quality?.broadcasts were fairly high, it may be marginally higher on BD, unless its mpeg2 and unless really higher bitrate it'll be worse, but broadcasts seem completelty adequete.

I think we should expect 1080p, better compression (i.e. less compression artifacts) and lossless audio!

I watch movies in HD on cable (Movie Network in Canada) and you can see tons of compression artifacts and many of them aren't even broadcast in 5.1 DD (just plain stereo). So I definitely expect a better presentation on Blu-ray. I remember reading in WSR (Issue 126) about the quality of HD broadcast which was what they called HD-lite!

Absolutely. They looked really good on HBOHD, even at 1080i. Sometimes, though, images in HDTV broadcast movies can become very pixilated when the motion speeds up. It varies from broadcast to broadcast for the same movie on the same channel. King Kong, for example no HBOHD can be really good or terrible that way. Often wondered why. Have cable, not satellite.

broadcasts are in 1080i and watered down because of the feed...

I expect Lucas to put little grain, if any because of how he wants his movies viewed.....sort of like 2001: A Space Odyssey having no grain...because it was supposed to be of the future...

Star Wars is supposed to be more advanced ....or whatever....Lucas will try to make the older movies look like they just came out and his previous modifications only support that...
