United Kingdom UK Criterion Collectors

How many of you guys collect Criterions then? I just started last month when I bit the bullet and tried to sort myself out with a region free Blu-ray player(which went off without a hitch). I first went for Seven Samurai and then put down a fair amount for 7 other titles, 2 of which are Trilogy sets. I'm falling in love with this company, I just finished watching the Samurai Trilogy, what a trip! Absolutely stunning.

Cannot wait to expand my collection

not from the UK, in Australia, but I have about 400+ criterions, and about 165 of those are blus. Along with MoC, Olive and Warner for their catalogs, they are my favorite releasers.

I have a few (viewable in my collection).

Great company, some great titles and lots of films I want to see. Trying to avoid blind-buying for the foreseeable future though.

Just watched a 30 minute interview with Toshiro Mifune on the High and Low Blu-ray, wow! I mean it's standard def from the 80s but it looks great! I love Criterion's attention to detail and how they track down rare stuff like this, it's very hard to find any interviews with the legend that is Toshiro Mifune, a brilliant extra

Started collecting them back in 2010 when I got my region free player. Went a bit nuts blind buying and took literally a year to get through them all. I sold about a third of what I bought, just the titles I didn't like enough to keep. Trying to be a little more picky in the future as they are bloody expensive.

I've discovered many of my favourite films though. Paris Texas being at the top of that list so far.

Barnes and Noble are having a 40% off sale for a week from the 28th of August until the 4th of September and I believe there will be a 50% off Criterions sale in late November. I live in Australia recently got a region free blu-ray player, got a couple of Wes Anderson blu's for good prices but I'll probably be buying a couple more Criterions during this 40% off sale and then really splurging in the 50% off sale.

I was contemplating getting a region free player for ages but couldn't justify spending that kind of money when I spent about $200 on my first blu-ray player which still works great. When Rosemarys Baby, The Game and In the Mood for Love were announced I decided enough was enough and I bit the bullet and just bought it.

I'm really glad I did too because aside from the beautiful Criterions, there are also so many wonderful region A locked titles I see get dramatic price drops that I always wished I could get but never could. Now I have no restrictions on what I can and cannot order.

I always wanted to splurge on those 50% off sales, but the import charges in the UK pretty much made it pointless.

Oh I miss the days of PlayUSA selling them for £17.99 each, right under the customs limit (at the time.)

I bought a batch from B&N during their last 50% off sale. It's true that there's barely any saving after P+P but it was still a reasonable import price and you don't seem to get hit with customs no matter how many you order.

Unfortunately a lot of them were resealed if that bothers people.

I started collecting them in April after going Region FREE.

Ended up blowing £800 on them by July and now have 40 of them.

Only picking some of the best stuff that is coming out now, e.g. In The Mood For Love.

Criterion was the main reason I got a region-A player. I have 26 Criterion BDs (just counted them) and another in the post as we speak. The Third Man, The Night of the Hunter and 12 Angry Men are my favourite Criterion releases.

I wouldn't say i "collect" them, but i do own a couple of the best! (Or just the ones that interest me)

My first was Seven Samurai which is fantastic!
Then i got Benjamin Button, Carlos, 12 Angry Men, Godzilla and Being John Malkovich - All awesome!

I'm looking to buy some more Samurai films in the future, along with "Che" by Steven Soderbergh and "The Game" by David Fincher
I really want to get "The Third Man" by Orson Welles too, but that one of course is OOP and very expensive. (DAMN YOU STUDIO CANAL)

Yep.

I've only got three so far, with another three on order. Been region free aweek.

I'll be selling some of the dvd side of Criterion to fund blu upgrades, Wages of Fear, Seven Samurai, Kagemusha etc.

Three Outlaw Samurai looks pretty decent, no extras though.

Awesome, what are they live with their P&P charges, and are they customs-friendly?

Shipping charges not too bad (probably better off checking their website or putting in a fake order than just asking here if you want an accurate estimate).

As for customs, I've never been hit with any from B&N even though I've ordered things of high value (like the Three Colors Trilogy). I don't know of anybody else who has either. They mark all of their parcels as containing 'books' on the forms which I believe do not require customs to be paid

Their cheapest shipping method can take like, 3 weeks or something though. Once it took months, but they sent out a replacement Express when I complained it was taking way longer than the estimate.

Sweet, might be able to finally get the Critierion releases that I desperately need. Maybe, I should have waited for this sale before ordering Paths of Glory and The Killing from Amazon US.

allyourmusic, a US based amazon.uk seller have an extensive Criterion selection. Most are priced over £15 though so I've avoided using them for Criterions. I recently received a non-Criterion order from them though and it was clear the package had not been sent from the US, despite their seller blurb stating all packages are shipped from California. Does anyone know if they've started shipping directly from the UK now?

I ordered two Blu-rays from them earlier this month, and they packaged both of them together (which they don't normally do), and it never got caught by customs despite having a value of over £15, so it's possible.
