I am also curious. From what I could guess, it could be that for home video, just like avatar the video has been modified from 2.39 to 1.78 so that it fills up your 16:9 screen. Although note that there is a specific difference betwenen Avatar and this- Avatar was shot in 1.78 and then cropped to 2.35 to display in many theatres, hence the original was retained for home video. For Titanic, i doubt it was shot in 1.78. In case if at all was shot in 1.78, then buckle up for excitement we could be seeing more image on top and bottom. Alternative possibility (though pointless and wastage of space) is that of course a cropped 1.78 version from the original 2.35 by cutting the sides is possibly included on BD for filling up our widescreens. Probably why we have 2 2D BDs and 2 3D BDs. Note: All just guesses- cant say anything for sure. Anyone following the hollywood BD blogs on this topic?

The 3D version could be 1.78:1. Titanic was shot in Super 35 so the frame can be opened up vertically.

Thanks for that Dragun.

It is now Officially Cnnfirmed thanks to Blu ray.com review.

Titanic 3D version is 1.78:1 by vertically opening up the matte for Super 35.

sadly, for those with 2D players, Titanic 2D vesion remains the same regular 2.35 on blu ray.

But what's wrong with that? That is how the movie was originally envisioned and screened in the theaters.

True. But as I myself dont like 3D so much, for me, an additional version of 2D with 1.78 option wud have been so much more stellar. Just the thought of mising the additional vertical information available only in 3D version is a bit saddening by that bit. No big deal though.

Yes, but that doesn't seem to be the case for all the shots. It seems when Cameron shot the film, he didn't protect the image for a 1.78:1 conversion, as a result there are quite a number of scenes on the open-matte version which are straight Pan&Scan from the scope version. While some are selective pan&scan or you may call them limited pan&scan, where the image loses info on the sides and gains a little info vertically.
Even then the scope Bluray(2.35 version) has lost a bit of image horizontally, from the Special Edition DVDs framing, which had more image at the sides.
I guess edge issues created this problem, but it shouldn't happen, especially when they made a 4K master and cleaned up the film so well.

Maybe those P&S shots had VFX that were only rendered for 2.40:1?

No idea why that would happen, unless Cameron wanted it that way or it was an error.

Star Movies HD was airing Titanic Yestrday and i noticed that there is tremendous difference between color temperature of blu ray and the broadcast version. So I had doubt that they do not broadcast the remastered HD version. The doubt was confirmed by the milky way scene which was the only scene re-done and replaced in original edit to fix the scene in the remastered version.

Anyway, the reason I posted this is to ask if it is always the case that HD broadcast channels do not use the same source that is used for Blu rays? Can anyone confirm?
