Movies watched for the 1st time this weekend:

M
Tokyo Story
Mr. Nobody

Enjoyed them all. Now a day off today, will hopefully get 2-3 more in. It sure is tough to find quality movie viewing time once you get backlogged.

I gotta stop watching these political punditry shows, and start unwrapping these BDs.

It'd make sense. Why else would he view it on some tiny screen at the school library? I think it's definitely something not already in the collection.

I still have to watch some Blus I bought over a year ago, a couple Bond films. I also haven blus of Marienbad and Leon Morin to watch. I've watched the films before, just not in HD. I ended up watching The Aristocats, The Rescuers, The Rescuers Down Under, and the Hunger Games this weekend instead. At least that was 4 blus off my need to watch list.

NYU's library does have Olympia as part of its collection (and a copy that was released before 2004).

So it's still possible.

Their copy has a date of 1997 but it says from Home Vision Cinema. It doesn't say Criterion on the record but HVC has licensed to Criterion many times.

I hope it is Olympia. It would be something different the usual releases we've been seeing.

I'm still looking for a copy of Rosetta, new or used. I have a sealed copy of Le Havre or an open copy of Shallow Grave to trade.

I watched Certified Copy on Saturday. What a great film! It is really two films in one and the title takes on a number of different meanings throughout. Easily one of the best purchases I have made this year (and Juliette Binoche, )

This is my first experience with Abbas Kiarostami and I am certainly interested in more of his films (Worth noting, I do have Close Up). if anyone can make a recommendation it would be welcomed.

I just finished watching "Down by Law". Wonderful blu ray transfer, better contrast than the DVD. Hopefully criterion can give Dead Man the same treatment, if they decide to release it.

Echo Bridge released a blu-ray for DEAD MAN in 2011.

Kiarostami is one of my favorites. Here are some films I throughly recommend. Be advised, most of his films are quite slow and require a certain level of attention to really get the full experience. You will probably love them, though, as Certified Copy is more or less along those lines .

Koker Trilogy:
- Where is the Friend's Home?
- Life and Nothing More
- Through the Olive Trees
Taste of Cherry

If you like what you see going through them, I suggest catching up the work of Jafar Panahi and Mohsen Makhmalbaf too as an "introduction" to the Iranian New Wave.

My quick take on Lonesome is that this is a must-have Blu-ray for any silent movie fan...not only for the one-of-a-kind, almost experimental titular film, but all the background info on previously unknown (to me) Paul Fejos. This set even includes 2 of his other films, The Last Performance and Broadway. I was so enthralled, I watched the whole durn thing last night. Criterion rediscovery at its finest.
I'm going to presume it's because (most) people don't have this title yet. It's not coming out until tomorrow, and I presume conversation on the set will be forthcoming. I'm looking forward to checking it out, it appears to be quite the package.

The h3ll you say Cinemach. You mean Lonesome actually got delivered to a P.O. Box up here in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies almost one week before its U.S. street date? I thought if I had it then it must have already been in release for at least 2 weeks.

"You go ImportCDs!"

They went bankrupt:

[Show spoiler]PlanetAxel.com is no more!
It is with great sadness, deep regret and utter embarrassment that we announce the closure and bankruptcy of PlanetAxel.com

On Monday afternoon, June 18th, 2012 the board of directors have informed us that no further investment will be made in the company. This comes in light of the recently finished 2011 financials which showed such an insurmountable deficit and loss to company value that a swift decision was made almost overnight. We have been asked to provide a quick summary/FAQ of your options as a previous customer of PlanetAxel.com with respect any outstanding orders/refunds.

If you have SHIPPED orders according to your order history but you have not received them yet
We have shipped out orders as late as the morning of Monday June 18th. If you order history lists your order as SHIPPED, then it has indeed shipped. If you are still to receive shipped orders, we would suggest waiting roughly 10-12 weekdays in which case 99% of all shipped orders will definitely have arrived.

If you have prepaid orders that have not yet shipped according to your order history
We will refund and delete all outstanding orders. Having said that; as this is a case of bankruptcy we fear that our accounts may be frozen at some point in the near future.

IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR REFUND BY MONDAY JUNE 25TH:
You must put in a claim with your bank, PayPal or Visa/MasterCard. For most customers this would be an issue for their local bank. Print this page and a statement with highlighted transactions. Tell them that you have paid for products using your credit card that you haven't received. Some banks will tell you that you have to file such claims within a 1-2 month period. THIS IS NOT CORRECT! Both Visa and MasterCard offer a THIRTEEN MONTH worldwide grace period for such claims. Be sure to INSIST on that despite what your bank teller may tell you!

If you have a voucher outstanding or have outstanding orders paid in full by a voucher
The voucher is unfortunately lost.

On a personal note I would like apologize to everyone that will be somehow affected or inconvenienced by this matter. I've spend half my life with the company (18 years in total) and it all ended today. This is not 'just business' to me, but sincerely personal. I can honestly say that this has been a sad, sad day for all of us here at the office but the fact that so many suppliers, affiliates, employees and most important of all, customers are affected by this bankruptcy is almost unbearable.

On behalf of everyone at PlanetAxel.com I offer my sincerest and heartfelt apologies and thank you for your support over the years.

With sincerest regards,

Rasmus Christiansen, General Manager

But how does exceptionally speedy shipping on an International pre-order translate into a business in jeopardy?

I was surprised to receive my blind preorder of

Quadrophenia

one day early from Amazon. I like when that happens. It's occurred a few times with different orders over the past month.
